Squid Game: The Challenge Trailer Shows ‘Savage’ Gameplay — and Friends Turned Enemies — for a Cash Prize

“Attention, all players.” Squid game is here in real life … whether you are ready or not.

On Monday, Netflix shared the first trailer for Squid Game: The Challenge, which features 456 players engaging in chaos and deception in hopes of winning a whopping $4.56 million in prize money. In it, the contestants step into the world Squid game — from high bunks and famous competitions to the same green overalls seen in drama series. There’s even a clan of pink-suited employees ready and willing to keep the group in check.

“This is a wild game,” says one contestant as the contests fly by. There’s a Red Light, Green Light game, with everyone’s favorite (or least favorite) larger-than-life doll, vending machines full of blue teddy bears, and rainbow stairs that lead to… well, no one knows yet.

And of course, there will be “blood”. But to keep things PG, the blood is black ink. The move during the “Red Light, Green Light” challenge even sees one woman hit with liquid in the heart. Her answer? “Oh—.”

It’s a game of “strategy,” says one player, while another promises to make best friends even though he’ll “absolutely cheat on you,” they add. As friendships are formed, so are rivalries. Some rely on alliances as a way to get by. Sometimes, however, strategy is not enough. The trailer ends with one player falling dozens of feet off a bridge after the floor beneath them crumbles.

The streamer first announced the reality show in June 2022, based on the viral hit of one of Netflix’s biggest series, Squid game. The concept of the fictional series was much more violent — where death was the usual means of elimination from a high-stakes game. Each challenge centered around a nostalgic children’s game infused with a fatal twist.

There was some controversy for the reality show version. In June — a year after the show was announced — some contestants said the show’s treatment was “inhumane,” according to Variety.

An article in The Sun quoted one contestant as saying: “It was like a war zone. People left in tears,” while another recounted filming in extremely cold conditions. “Even if hypothermia set in, people were willing to stay as long as possible because there was a lot of money at stake.”

Netflix and the production companies of the series responded with a statement. “We care deeply about the health of our cast and crew and the quality of this series. Any suggestion that the competition is rigged or claims of serious harm to players are simply untrue. We have taken all the appropriate security measures, including taking care of the competitors – and an independent referee oversees each game to ensure it is fair to everyone,” the statement read.
