Star of huge 80s comedy unrecognisable 31 years after show is cancelled – as she skips Emmys reunion with cast

A TOP TV actress looked completely unrecognizable after dissing her co-stars at their Emmys reunion earlier this month.

The 74-year-old sitcom favorite, wrapped in a black coat and a blue turtleneck, strolled in the winter sun.

Shelley Long played Diane Chambers in the long-running US series Cheers, and her waitress character quit at the end of the fifth season.

She starred in the series from 1982 to 1987, winning two Golden Globes and an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series in 1983.

The Indiana-born star received a total of five Emmy nominations — but that wasn’t enough to encourage her to attend the recent star-studded ceremony with her former co-stars.

Instead, Shelley, who also recently had a recurring role on hit sitcom Modern Family, was seen enjoying the fresh air as she took her dog for a walk.

Shelley walked around in comfy sneakers and looked deep in thought as she made her way down the street.

She left her white hair in a poker straight style and wore thick black square-framed glasses.

Meanwhile, several of her TV co-stars enjoyed a night out in California earlier this month.

Kelsey Grammer, Rhea Perlman, John Ratzenberger and Ted Danson took the stage at the Peacock Theater to present two awards.

Along with Shelley, actor Woody Harrelson decided to leave the show.

Cheers has garnered an incredible 117 Emmy nominations over its 11 seasons.

When the show aired, viewers were glued to Shelley’s character’s intense relationship with playboy bar owner Sam Malone and their resulting relationship between two and five years.

Her final scenes in season five saw her postpone her wedding to Sam as she pursued her dreams of becoming a published author.

Show bosses didn’t kill off her character – so they left room for her return – but Shelley decided to keep her final scenes as they were.

She previously denied falling out with Ted Danson, who played Sam, but admitted he was frustrated with her.

She told the Sun Sentinel: “We never fought. Maybe we should have.

“I mean, he got mad once, pretty late in the game, about something I wish he’d told me about a long time ago, because I did my best to change it.

“And I think I did a pretty good job, though maybe it wasn’t good enough for him.”

In the same interview, Shelley said that Ted’s problems were related to her being late and not being able to get to the set on time.

She added: “Those days I ate more hair because I would have dinner while it was done.

“I did all this after Ted made his suggestion.”

She then added, “I liked Ted and I still like Ted.”

Back in 2022, we reported that their Cheers co-star Kirstie Alley had tragically died at the age of 71.
