The crew of the USS Cerritos sets sail for the latest in a series of wild galactic adventures.
The fifth and final season of the series Star Trek: Lower Decks, Premiering on Thursday, October 24, it will see Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Boimer (Jack Quaid), Tendi (Noël Wells) and Rutherford (Eugene Cordero) embark on new missions as newly minted lieutenants.
The Paramount+ show not only promises to show the four in a somewhat new light, but also throws them into a new set of missions promising “more explosions” than ever.
“It’s a boost and a glow,” Wells, 37, tells PEOPLE exclusively.
“We all have more responsibilities in Season 5. We all grow as people, characters and people, and learn more about who they are when they have more responsibilities,” says Cordero, 46, adding, “They don’t ‘I don’t feel like.’Lower deck‘ in Season 5, but there are moments where they do.”

lower decks The trailer for season 5 hints at the problems and obstacles the team will face, including skirmishes with aliens, a decontamination scene that hints at the prequel Star Trek: Enterprise and episode cluttered with different versions Star Trek: Voyager’s Harry Kim (Garrett Wang) comes from parallel universes. (It seems one version of Harry finally got the promotion it deserved.)
“Garrett Wang, he has so much personality and energy, and he’s such a Harry Kim vibe, we couldn’t have just one,” teases Newsome, 41. “So we had to find a way to have multiple The Garretts, the multiple Harrys, because the fans – and we’ve been waiting so long to see Harry – they’ve all been waiting for Harry to come back, so we had to make it big.”
WITH Lower decks Going into the final season, Cordero says the mood among the cast is less “bittersweet” and more “celebratory.”
“It’s never over in this franchise,” he says. “So we’re just happy to do another season. We’re really deep into the canon of these characters, and we’ve learned so much about them, and there’s a lot more to learn in Season 5.”

While Wells will miss how Star Trek fans “genuinely love” her and her character Tendi — “Social media can be a cruel place, but everyone Trek interactions with fans were really positive,” she explains — something Cordero admits she’ll remember lower decks boundless optimism.
“I will miss the positivity and ownership of something you love,” he continues, adding that he will especially miss his character. “You rarely have so much passion and energy for things you’re actually good at.”
“When you do a cartoon, usually someone does something stupid this or that, and I think that positivity is there, but really, what we see on this show, what I’m going to miss is the friendships. I mean, I’m going to miss this, the Tendi/Rutherford relationship , Mariner/Rutherford, all of them, Rutherford with Boimler, all those moments, I’m just going to miss those interactions.”
