On April 10, 2017, Stella Erhuvwu Okotete was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari to the position of Executive Director, Business Development, Nigeria Export-Import, or NEXIM, Bank. Many Nigerians welcomed the appointment and praised the president for choosing an energetic, sharp and meticulous young woman for the post.
In fact, many people felt the appointment was well-deserved and had high hopes for how well he would fit into his new role as a peg in a square hole.
She was re-appointed for a second five-year term together with the rest of the bank’s executive management in accordance with Article 11(4) of the NEXIM Bank Act in recognition of their achievements during their first term, so it was not unexpected.
“As the expiry date of the first mandate approached, it was critical to assess their performance since assuming their responsibilities in the primary areas of the bank’s mandate. According to the findings of the assessment, the current management team has performed well and shown key achievements, according to a statement by Yunus Tanko Abdullahi, Special Adviser to the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning on Media and Communications.
Okotete, who held the position of executive director of NEXIM Bank five years ago, undoubtedly possesses the necessary education, experience and other qualifications to lead any export agency in the world.
Okotete, a public administrator and business development expert, has an outstanding track record of increasing organizational growth in the many roles she has held in public agencies.
Okotete oversaw the operations and activities related to the State Free Education Program in Agbarho, Ughelli, Orogun, Ogor, Agbarha, Evwreni and Uwheru Municipality areas while serving as the Chairman of the House Committee on Education from 2008 to 2011.
In addition, she promoted the “war against day-gripping and hawking during school hours” legislation and created and oversaw girls’ education programs in the local government area.
She was the team leader of the Adult Education Advocacy Group.
She later served as chairperson of the House of Representatives Committee on Health and co-sponsored legislation banning FGM in Ughella North.
Stella Okotete Education
Okotete, a resident of Ekrerhavwen-Agbarho Community in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, was born on April 20, 1984. She attended the Federal Government Girls College, Benin-City, Edo State, where she graduated with her final year diploma in 2000.
She then proceeded to Rivers State College of Art and Science, Rumuola, Port Harcourt, where she graduated in 2002 with a Bachelor of Laws.
Okotete attended Benson Idahosa University in Benin City to complete her studies. There she earned a BA in International Studies and Diplomacy in 2006, and in 2012 she earned a Certificate in Emerging Leaders from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government in Boston, USA.
The National Open University of Nigeria awarded Okotete a Masters in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution and she is currently working on a Masters in Public Administration.
Her additional credentials include a Certificate in Entrepreneurial Management (Centre for Enterprise Development) from Pan Africa University in 2017, a Certificate in Risk Management in Banking from INSEAD in Fontainebleau, France in 2019, a Certificate in New Business Models in Society from the University of Virginia in in the United States of America in 2020, and a certificate in AML/CFT, compliance and corporate governance from the CBN International Training Institute in 2021.
