Stephen Colbert is recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.
Official accounts on social networks The Late Show with Stephen Colbert shared a message from the host on Monday announcing that the show is being canceled for this week.
“I’m sorry to say that I have to cancel our shows this week,” said Colbert, 59. “I’m sure you’re thinking, ‘Turkey overdose, Steve? The gravy boat capsized?’ Actually, I’m recovering from surgery for a ruptured appendix.”
“I am grateful to my doctors for their care and to Evie and the children for putting up with me. In the future, all emails to my appendix will be handled by my pancreas,” he added.

Stephen Colbert to host Late show Remotely after a positive test for COVID
This comes a month after Colbert was forced to host his CBS late-night show remotely from his home after testing positive for COVID-19.
“IN THE MEANTIME… Late show It’s going to look a little different tonight as Stephen is at home with Covid (he’s ok!),” reads the post on Instagram and X (formerly Twitter). “But be sure to tune in because the show will be going the distance with Monologue, Meanwhile, Jada Pinkett Smith and Ricky Velez. #whatyearisit?”
At the time, Rachel Maddow, Talking Heads and Jon Batiste were among the guests who appeared on Late show that week.
The show released an update to Colbert a few days later stating that he would be out for the rest of the week.
“I’m sorry to say, per doctor’s orders, I’ll be out for the rest of the week,” message on social networks read. “I’m taking a break so I can deliver the handcrafted talk show we’re so happy to serve you.”
The message accompanied a photo of socks and bows that Colbert joked came from fellow late-night host Jimmy Fallon. “In the meantime, the intoxicating mixture of Paxlovid and onions in my socks (thanks, Fallon) will rebuild my immune system,” Colbert continued.
