The Suicide of Stephen K Amos

An 18-year-old fashion student killed himself months after he was allegedly groomed by an unknown gay TV comedian, according to evidence presented at the inquest. In the days before his death, Ben Cowburn informed colleagues and family that the TV comedian had taken advantage of him and left him feeling “belittled and humiliated”. Cowburn committed suicide in December 2010 after overdosing on drugs. The comedian, identified only as “Mr X” during the investigation to protect his identity, is accused of showering the teenager with gifts before driving him to parties where alcohol and drugs were in high demand.

The comic occasionally crawled into Mr Cowburn’s bed for sex, the inquest heard, and was convinced to strip in front of a group of blokes. To attend the Fashion Retail Academy, Mr Cowburn moved from his hometown of Truro, Cornwall, to London where he met and began dating the comedian in September 2009. It was around this time, according to his mother Sharon Cowburn, that she learned “that Ben met a celebrity in a pub when he was out with friends.” “He asked Ben to fix something for him,” she continued. Steve and I cautioned Ben because we were being very careful.

He informed me that the client already had a stylist and would not be able to pay Ben but would instead buy him gifts. Mr. Cowburn was supposed to work as the comedian’s stylist, but after a disagreement, the kid attempted suicide several times. Later, after being sectioned under the Mental Health Act, he was admitted to Longreach Hospital. Despite claiming that the student’s sexual contact with the man was completely voluntary, nurse David Taylor testified at the inquest that the student felt humiliated and embarrassed and believed the man was grooming him.
