Steve began his acting career in a neighborhood playhouse when he was six years old. At the age of 16, he earned an Actors Equity certificate for his performances in two plays directed by Oscar Hammerstein Jr. He performed in several plays while in college, including The Little Theater of the Rockies with Nick Nolte.
After college, he received a teaching fellowship at the University of Arizona, where he made his SAG debut in Joe Kidd opposite Clint Eastwood. In the same year, he made his television debut as an air force officer in the television drama Night Games.
