Steve Ira Hofstetter was born on September 11, 1979 in Queens, New York. His family lived in various locations while he was growing up, including Briarwood, Rego Park, and Forest Hill. He graduated in 1997 from Hunter College High School, which he attended. After graduating, he enrolled at Columbia University, a general studies institution, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in 2002.
