Steven Tyler Makes First Appearance Since Larynx Fracture: ‘My Throat’s Been Better but It’s on the Mend’

Steven Tyler is nursing his recent vocal injury.

While hosting his 5th annual Jamie Grammys Watch Jam — benefiting Janie’s Fund, a nonprofit he founded to help girls who have experienced abuse and neglect — the 75-year-old Aerosmith frontman explained how he’s recovering from breaking his larynx in 2023

“My throat is better, but it’s on the mend,” he told the audience at the party held at the Hollywood Palladium. “And of all things, I decided to take advice not from my doctors, but from the girls at Janie’s house.”

He went on to explain that some of the well-wishers wrote him letters to make him feel better, sharing some of his favorites with the crowd. “We’ve got your back,” one girl told him.

Another wrote a more extensive note. “I truly hope that as you recover and achieve much success, you will be able to achieve much more and keep pushing even when things get tough,” the letter read. “You have a lot of potential and I want you to keep that potential.”

“I hope you get well soon – you’re in my favorite band,” Tyler read as he joked, “I can’t wait to show this to Joe Perry.”

His daughter, Mia Tyler, tells PEOPLE that her dad is “doing a lot better” — though she confirmed that he’s not following doctor’s orders.

“He’s not supposed to talk sometimes, so I literally have to yell at him and say, ‘You can’t talk to me on the phone right now, let’s just text,'” she says, adding that he talks on his phone instead of typing.

Steven’s vocal cord injury occurred during a show with Aerosmith in September, causing the band to postpone the remaining shows on their farewell tour.

“Unfortunately, Steven’s vocal cord injury is more serious than first thought,” the band announced on Instagram. “His doctor has confirmed that in addition to damaging his vocal cords, he has broken his larynx which requires constant care.”

The message included a quote directly from Steven, which read: “I’m heartbroken not to be out with Aerosmith, my brothers and the amazing Black Crowes, playing to the best fans in the world. I promise we’ll be back as soon as we can!”
