But EastEnder Jamie Borthwick, who performed the foxtrot, entered the dance-off for the first time – and lost out to Gladiators’ Montell Douglas, performing the quickstep.
It came after Saturday’s live show became the show’s most-watched episode with 8.2 million viewers.
The show decides on the semi-finalists next week.
A TV insider said: “The audience were left gasping when it was revealed that Pete had gone through with it.
“Even he seemed shocked.
“The question is whether Pete might end up in the final four thanks to the wave of public support.
“It seems unlikely, but he’s enjoying an incredible surge in late votes, so nothing seems impossible now.”
Pete’s flamboyant outfit seems to have won the admiration of female viewers.
Last week he wore pink PVC cha-cha-cha pants.
This week his odds of going out were 3/4 with Montella 5/2 and Jamie 5/1.

Jamie said last night: “It’s strictly magic.
“I had the best time.”
His pro partner Michelle Tsiakkas added: “Jamie is an amazing dancer and has improved so much.”
Injured pro Amy Dowden praised her former partner JB Gill’s Charleston with Lauren Oakley, writing: “So proud of you. I would do anything in the world to be out there with you.”
