The actress divorced Andrew Prutt in 2013. The couple, who married in 2004, have a 15-year-old son, Roman.
Spencer channeled her divorce experience into Extended familyin which she plays a woman trying to maintain a friendship with her ex-husband (Cryer) while in a new relationship with Boston Celtics owner Trey (Faison).
“It’s hard, but I think the best art is personal,” Spencer said. “It feels like it’s happening to you and you can project your life onto it. I think my son, who grew up in two different homes, might scold us later: ‘Why didn’t you do that?’ I think we’ve all said that it’s nice to put something on the air where it’s just a representation of doing something a little differently and just to spark more conversation about it.”
