Sum 41’s Deryck Whibley Hospitalized with Pneumonia, Wife Says: ‘We Spent the Entire Night in the ER’

Sum 41 frontman Deryck Whibley has been hospitalized with pneumonia, his wife, model Ariana Cooper Whibley, said Friday.

“Deryck and I were supposed to be in Chicago right now, celebrating our eighth wedding anniversary, but the universe had a different plan for us,” Ariana, 32, wrote in an Instagram post alongside a photo of the Toronto-born musician. 43, he was wheeled to an ambulance.

“We spent all night in the ER and now we’re going to spend the next few days here in the hospital as he battles pneumonia. The scariest thing is that his heart is under a lot of strain and we’re being told there’s a possibility of heart failure,” Ariana continued. The couple has two children, son Lydon Idby (3) and daughter Quentin Arlo (6 months).

Ariana added: “It’s obviously not the first time we’ve been in this situation, but it brings back a lot of really hard memories to see him back in the hospital bed with wires and an IV.”

“I know how strong he is because I’ve witnessed what he’s been able to overcome, but that doesn’t make it any easier to see. I’ll do my best to let everyone know, but if you can keep him in your heart for the next few days, we’d really appreciate it, ” Ariana concluded her post. In April 2014, Whibley collapsed in his kitchen and was rushed to the hospital by his then-fiancee, where doctors said his liver and kidneys had failed.

He was in a coma and sedated for a week to detox his body from the alcohol, and a health scare helped him finally sober up and regain his health.

After Whibley’s stay in the hospital in 2014 and Ariana’s own depression and suicide attempt, the couple decided to get sober together. “We said, ‘At this point, we’re going to take our lives seriously and get this s— out,'” Whibley told PEOPLE in 2021.

2015, nearly a year after his hospitalization, Whibley said Vice about her journey to sobriety, “It was the right time in my life for it to happen. I’m glad it happened now and not when I’m like 50, because my body wouldn’t have been able to handle it. But it’s unfortunate that it had to come to this in the first place. However, I feel better now than I’ve ever felt. I’m healthier. I’m in the best shape of my life.”

The couple married in August 2015 in Los Angeles.

In May, Sum 41 members Whibley, Dave Baksh, Jason McCaslin, Tom Thacker and Frank Zummo announced via social media that they would each go their separate ways after the release of the new album. The band wrapped up their US tour with The Offspring and Simple Plan on September 3, but plan to perform at When We Were Young 2023 in Las Vegas next month.

“Being in Sum 41 since 1996 has brought us some of the most beautiful moments in our lives. We are forever grateful to our fans, old and new, who supported us in any way,” reads the press release of the band “Fat Lip”. “It’s hard to articulate the love and respect we have for all of you and we wanted you to hear it from us first.”

The final performance of Suma 41 is scheduled for September 23, 2024 in Nanterre, France. Last week, the band announced on Instagram that all tickets were sold out.
