Suman Berry

Suman Bery is an Indian economist, academician and author who was appointed Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog (National Institute for Transformation of India) in April 2022. He worked at the World Bank for 28 years, retiring as chief economist in 2000. Non-resident fellow at Bruegel Institute, a Brussels-based economic policy research institute, and global fellow at the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC. National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi.

Suman Kumar Bery was born in 1949. He attended The Doon School in Dehradun and received a scholarship to attend Oakham School, a British boarding school. He holds a BA in Philosophy, Politics and Economics from Magdalen College, Oxford University. He attended Princeton University’s Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, pursuing a master’s degree in public affairs.

Suman Bery began her career in 1972 through the World Bank’s Young Professionals Program. From 1973 to 1979, he worked as an economist in the Department of Public Finance. During his 28-year tenure, he held different positions in different departments, such as Senior Economist of Department 1C Yugoslavia Department (1980-1984), Director of the Department of National Economic Management (1984-1988), Bolivia, Paraguay and Uruguay Director, Country Operations Division, Latin America Region (1988-1992), Latin America Regional Advisory Group of Economic Advisers (1994-1997). Finally, before leaving the World Bank in 2000, he served as Chief Economist for Brazil’s Latin America Country Operations. From 1992 to 1994, he served as Special Advisor to the Reserve Bank of India in Mumbai. In 2001, he joined the National Council of Applied Economic Research (NCAER), New Delhi, as Director General (CEO). While at NCAER, he also served as a member of Prime Minister Manmohan Singh’s Economic Advisory Council and the Reserve Bank of India’s Technical Advisory Committee on Monetary Policy. He worked at NCAER for nearly ten years, leaving in 2011. From 2012 to mid-2016, Suman was appointed Chief Economist at Shell International in The Hague, Netherlands. He is one of the senior leadership members of Shell’s global scenarios team. From April 2019 to December 2022, he served as a Global Fellow at the Asia Program at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars in Washington, DC. On April 30, 2022, he was appointed as the Vice Chairman of NITI Aayog. At the time of his NITI appointment, he was a Senior Visiting Fellow at the Center for Policy Research, New Delhi, a Senior Fellow at the Mastercard Center for Inclusive Growth, and a Board Member of the Shakti Sustainable Energy Foundation, New Delhi Aayog.
