Sunil Dutt was born on June 6, 1928 in a Kurdish village in Jhelum, Punjab (now part of Pakistan). When he was five years old, his father Dewan Raghunath Dutt passed away. At the age of 18, he witnessed the Hindu and Muslim riots that followed the partition of India. His father’s friend Yakub saved Sunil’s entire family, including his mother Kulwanti Devi Dutt, brother Som Dutt and sister Raj Rani Bari, from these riots. Settled in the small village of Manduli in Yamuna Nagar, Punjab (now Haryana).

He then moved to Lucknow with his mother and lived in Aminabad Gali. Soon after, they moved to Bombay where he joined Jai Hind College and completed his studies in 1954. Sunil also worked in the ‘Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport’ (BEST) department for a while.

He then decided to make a career in the Indian film industry and acted in many super hit movies. Between 1950 and 1960, he was one of the top actors in Bollywood.
