His father wanted Sunil to become a wrestler. He started training at Jindenidani Sports Academy. After the death of his father in 2010, he decided to retire from wrestling; however, with the encouragement of his mother, he continued his journey as a wrestler. He initially started his wrestling career as a freestyle wrestler, but switched to Greco-Roman wrestling in 2015. He made his international debut at the 2016 Asian Junior Wrestling Championships. He went on to win medals at many international wrestling competitions. In 2019, he entered the finals of the Asian Wrestling Championships in China; however, he was defeated by Iran’s Hussein Ahmed Noori in the finals. In 2020, he created history by winning the gold medal in the Greco-Roman wrestling category of the Asian Wrestling Championships after 27 years, which was previously won by Pappu Yadav in 1993. In October 2023, Sunil defeated Kazakhstan’s Atabek Azisbekov with a pinfall . In the men’s Greco-Roman 87kg competition at the Asian Games in Hangzhou, China, he won the bronze medal with a score of 2-1.

- In 2007, his father Ashwini Kumar attended a wedding where he met some Pehelwans (wrestlers). He was so impressed by the honors the wrestlers received at the event that he decided to make one of his children a wrestler.
