Sunny Singh was an Indian criminal who murdered mafia-turned-politician brothers Atiq Ahmed and Ash in public in Prayagraj Ashraf Ahmed. He is allegedly a member of Rohit Yadav gang and Sundar Bhati gang.

Sunny Singh aka Purane aka Chote Thakur was born in 2000 (age 23; as of 2023) in Kurala village, Hamirpur district, Uttar Pradesh. He was a troubled child who often got into fights with other children. After completing eighth grade, he dropped out of school.

His father’s name is late Jagat Singh, who died in 2003, and his mother’s name is Krishna Devi, who hails from Thatda village under Samerpur police station area. He has two brothers, Mangal Singh and Pintu Singh, and a married sister. Mangal suffered from alcoholism and sold his farmland before his death in 2020. His brother Pintu runs a restaurant in Manki Stand area of Hamirpur. His grandfather’s name was Kedar Singh.

Sunny has been a gambler since he was a child and often stole money from his brother’s restaurant to gamble, so his brother began to distance himself from him. Later, he left the village and went to Bangalore to work. He made 20,000 rupees and returned to Hamirpur; however, he lost all the money in gambling. The first case was registered against him in 2016 after he robbed a couple traveling on a bicycle of their gold and silver jewelery near Kuralamishripur village in Hamirpur. He later became a member of Rohit Yadav’s gang and was involved in several robberies. He was involved in a shootout with police, was arrested and sent to jail.

Association with Sundar Bhatti Gang
In 2021, he came into contact with feared gangster Sundar Bhati in Hamirpur jail and became a member of Bhati’s gang; however, they allegedly got into a fight on May 30, 2022 , both men’s jails have since been changed to avoid future escalations. Once, after he was released from prison, he had an argument with Babu Yadav of Kuralapatala village in Hamirpur and fired at Yadav; however, the bullet did not hit Yadav. More than 15 cases involving illegal possession of weapons, extortion, robbery and attempt to murder have been registered against Sunny and he is listed as history number 13 by the Kurala police station in Hamirpur district of Uttar Pradesh.

Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed murder case
On April 15, 2023, at 10:30 pm, Sunny and his two aides (Lovelesh Tiwari of Banda and Arun Maurya of Kasganj) gunned down the notorious gangster-turned-gangster in front of the media and police at MLN Medical Politician brothers Atiq Ahmed and Ashraf Ahmed addressed media persons while going for a medical check-up at a college in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh.
Ashraf Ahmed and his brother Atiq Ahmed went for medical check-up and seconds later Lovelesh, Sunny and Arun shot them.
They fired more than 30 rounds using Turkish-made Jigana and Girsan pistols, which are banned in India and cost Rs 60,000 to Rs 8 lakh each, and killed the brothers on the spot. The autopsy showed that Atiq was shot 8 times and Ashraf was shot 6 times. They were hit in vital parts of the body and died on the spot. The three men pretended to be journalists and approached the gang brothers, shot them at close range and surrendered after confirming the brothers’ deaths. When the police caught them, they shouted slogans of Jasri Ram and surrender.

During preliminary interrogations, the three said they killed the Mafia brothers for publicity because they wanted to become a Mafioso like the Ahmed brothers, police said. Investigation later revealed that they were paid more than Rs 3 crore to execute the deadly plan. A case was filed against Sunny and two other killers under IPC sections 302 (punishment for murder) and 307 (attempt to murder). Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held an emergency meeting with senior police officials at his official residence and imposed Section 144 on Uttar Pradesh. He also suspended 17 police officers who were present. They were subsequently placed in judicial custody for 14 days.

- He was allegedly the gunman who fired the first bullet at Ashraf Ahmed.
- One of his friends told the media that Sunny told him three or four days before killing Atiq and Ashraf that he was going to do something big and make his name very famous.
- Because of his close relationship with gang member Sundar Bhatti, there were accusations that followers of Bhatti’s gang provided weapons and other items to him and two other killers and may have been involved in the killing.
