Suspect Arrested After Killing 1, Injuring 2 in Knife and Hammer Attack in Paris

A suspect has been arrested after one man was killed and two others injured in a knife and hammer attack in Paris on Saturday night.

The incidents, which took place shortly before 9 p.m. local time near the Eiffel Tower, were allegedly carried out by a 26-year-old French citizen whose parents are Iranian, whose identity has not been confirmed, reports the BBC.

The man killed in the attack was a German tourist and a nurse, according to the outlet.

French Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin told the BBC that the suspect fatally stabbed the victim in the street while he was with his wife Rose-Marie Devillers.

After the taxi driver intervened and saved Devillers’ life, the alleged attacker fled to a nearby bridge and crossed the Seine River, the 41-year-old Darmanin said.

He then attacked two more victims, a Frenchman aged around 60 and a 66-year-old British tourist, hitting him in the eye with a hammer, writes the BBC.

Both victims were helped by an ambulance, and none of them suffered life-threatening injuries, said Darmanin. The New York Times.

Police then tracked down and arrested the suspect on suspicion of assassination – which French law defines as premeditated murder – and “attempted assassination in connection with a terrorist undertaking”, according to the BBC.

Darmanin, according to Reuters, said the suspect was allegedly heard shouting “Allahu Akbar” – an Arabic term meaning “God is great.” He reportedly told authorities he was upset because “so many Muslims are dying in Afghanistan and Palestine,” according to the BBC.
