Sutton Foster Returning to Broadway This Summer in Once Upon a Mattress Revival

Sutton Foster is back on the boards.

Two-time Tony Award winner, theater veteran and Younger star will return to Broadway this summer, leading a revival of Mary Rodgers and Marshall Barer’s beloved musical Once upon a time there was a mattress.

News about the production was announced on Friday, May 17. Previews begin Wednesday, July 31st at the Hudson Theater in New York, with the premiere set for Monday, August 12th. The limited engagement is currently scheduled until November 30th.

Based on the works of Hans Christian Andersen The Princess and the Pea — with a book by Jay Thompson, Dean Fuller and Marshall Barer — Was once a mattress follows the charmingly sassy Winnifred the Woebegone as she competes for the hand of Prince Dauntless, after his demanding mother Queen Aggravain insists he must marry the “real” princess before anyone else in their kingdom can.

Foster will play Winnifred, a role that originated in Carol Burnett’s 1959 Broadway production. The actress follows in the footsteps of stars who have played the role in various stage and screen adaptations over the years, such as Sarah Jessica Parker (in the first and last Broadway revivals in 1996) and Tracey Ullman (in the 2005 film).

This will be the second time Foster has stepped into Winnifred’s shoes. She played the role earlier this year at Encores! in New York City Center.

That production — recently adapted by Emmy Award winner Amy Sherman-Palladino, with whom Foster worked on Bunheads — here is the transfer to Broadway. Directed by Tony Award nominee and Lear deBessonet (Into the forest), and will feature choreography by Lorin Latarra (Who is Tommy).

After Broadway, Once upon a time there was a mattress, with Foster, will move to Los Angeles for a four-week engagement at the Ahmanson Theater Center Theater Group. Performances will be held there from December 10 to January 5, 2025.
