Swanand Kirkiel

Swanand Kirkire is an Indian lyricist, writer, dubbing singer, actor, assistant director and dialogue writer. He works primarily in Marathi and Hindi films. He is best known for the song “Bande Me Tha Dum… Vande Mataram” from the film Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) and the song “Behti Hawa Sa Tha Woh” from the film 3 Idiots (2009).

Swanand Kirkire was born on Wednesday, April 29, 1970 (50 years old in 2020) in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India. His star sign is Taurus. He graduated from Shri Dayanand High School in Madhya Pradesh, India, and later joined BVM Institute of Management Education in Madhya Pradesh for Bachelor of Commerce. Born into a singing family, Swanand was exposed to music and its techniques from a young age.

After graduation, Swanand moved to Delhi and started working in the vacuum cleaner sales department of Eureka Forbes. After some time, he applied for the design and directing course at the National School of Drama but was rejected; because he did not meet the selection criteria of acting in at least 10 plays. He then worked hard for two years and completed 10 plays.

Siwanand again applied for the design and directing course at NSD and was selected. After completing the course, Kirkil joined a theatre group and started writing and directing plays. Siwanand made his professional theatre debut in Manav Kaur’s Colour Blind.

One of his plays, Ek Sapna, was based on articles and documents written by Shaheed Bhagat Singh. The play caught the attention of film and television director Manju Singh, who invited Kirkire to write a script for a television series.

Parents and siblings

His father, Chintamani Kirkire, was a bank manager. His mother, Neelambari Kirkire, was an administrative officer at Indore University. Both his parents were classical singers and disciples of Kumar Gandharva, one of the great masters of Hindustani classical music. Swanand has an elder sister.

Profession

Swanand began his career as a screenwriter for Manju Singh’s television serial Swaraj, based on the life of Bhagat Singh. He then assisted renowned filmmaker Sudhir Mishra in films such as The Calcutta Mail, Chameli and Bhagat Singh. While Swanand was working under Mishra, Sudhir came across the lyrics of Mishra’s song Bawra Mann (which Swanand had written during his time in theatre) and decided to include it in his film Bhagat Singh. The song was recorded in Swanand’s voice and became a huge success. He then went on to work as a lyricist in many popular films such as Parineeta, Lage Raho Munna Bhai, 3 Idiots, Lafangey Parindey, Singham, Kai Po Che!, Parched and Fitoor.

Siwanand has been a dubbing singer in more than 40 songs, including “Tu Kisi Rail Si” in the film “Masaan” and “Monta Re” in the film “Lootera”.

He made his acting debut in 2003 with a small role in the Hindi film Hazaaron Khwaishein Aisi. He subsequently played small roles in many films including Eklavya: The Royal Guard, Crazy Cukkad Family, Saala Khadoos and Badrinath Ki Dulhania.

In 2017, he played the lead role in the Marathi film Chumbak. He has also acted in web series like Parchhayee – A Ghost Story of Ruskin Bond, Table No. 5, and The Verdict – State vs Nanavati. He has also acted in many short films and prints. Apart from this, he has also written dialogues for several films.
