Tameka Foster opens up about her co-parenting relationship with Usher.

The mom of five, 53, spoke to PEOPLE ahead of the premiere of her new WE tv series Bold & Bougietaking a minute to reflect on her co-parenting relationship with ex-husband Usher, 45. The former couple have sons Usher V, 16, and Naviyd, 15.

“It’s great. Yeah, everything is great,” says Foster. “We’re friends and the kids are at an age now where they can say where they want to be, like, ‘Hey, I want to be at my dad’s. I want to go to my mom’s.'”

“We have an open door policy with the guys. We let them go where they want to go. Everything goes pretty smoothly.”

Usher reflects on ‘hurt’ of stepson’s death: ‘It’s really hard to lose a child’ (Exclusive)

In November, Usher shared how learning that one of his children had type 1 diabetes years ago changed everything for him and Foster.

“From the moment type 1 diabetes became a conversation, it was a readjustment to life. Life as we knew it has changed,” the Grammy winner said of the chronic condition in which the pancreas does not produce enough insulin for the body, often requiring insulin injections to maintain normal blood sugar levels.

“It just comes with a lot of consideration and commitment as we all manage to make sure my child makes the right decisions to have a happy, healthy life,” he explained.

“The reason for the disaster is the lack of communication,” he said. “Honestly, you have to find the means and the ability to have parties together.” For him and Foster, “our [kid’s] an endocrinologist is a mutual basis.”

Still, said the star, “It was an assignment. It’s very complicated because the kids, along the way, will find a way to work you against each other. You have to watch what you say and always be listened to and more than that. They’re always watching.”

At the time, Usher said what was best for him and Foster tried to be understanding. “Her experience is what it is. My experience is what it is, and if we can find a place where we can meet in the middle to make the right decisions and also be aware of each other or at least be sensitive to things that are important to both sides, then hopefully that’s a win for all .”
