Taylor Lautner and Wife Tay Share the Biggest Lesson They’ve Learned in Their First Year of Marriage (Exclusive)

Taylor Lautner and his wife Tay Lautner share the biggest lesson they learned in their first year of marriage.

While hosting their inaugural Lemons Foundation gala in Los Angeles on Sunday, the couple told PEOPLE that they’ve discovered that “communication is key” since tying the knot on Nov. 11, 2022.

“We kind of knew that through our relationship. I mean, we’ve been together for almost six years,” Tay explained.

However, what they don’t really understand is that they both communicate very differently.

“Taylor and I have very different communication styles,” said Fr Twilight star, 31. “And so when we get into … I don’t even want to say we’re fighting, because we’re not really fighting. But when we get into a conversation or a disagreement, whatever, and we While I’m talking through it, he knows I’m mute and not really talking. And Taylor can process her emotions.”

Tay’s reticence to open up is sometimes a challenge for her husband. “It’s frustrating because it’s like I want to talk about everything right then and there, and be done with it. And I want to know her feelings. I know she’s upset. I’m like, ‘Just tell me,'” Taylor explained.

“But she just goes blank and has to take a step back to take a moment to process and think and figure out exactly what she’s feeling,” the actor continued. “So once we discovered each other’s different communication styles, it’s now much easier to go through those conversations.”

The couple also shared that they were both surprised by how different their relationship was after they got engaged and expected to get married. “It was a commitment,” Taylor explained.

“And we knew we wanted to be together,” added Tay, 26. “I think we went through so much life together before we got married. You know, we’re going through COVID, I’m working as a COVID-19 nurse. Taylor retires from the industry. We’ve just dealt with a lot of life that I feel just prepared us to know how to resolve conflicts or to know how to talk about things. It just set us up for success.”

“We’ve had a lot of practice,” Taylor agreed.

They told PEOPLE that they entered their first year of marriage expecting it to be a little rough, but so far they’ve been pleasantly surprised by how easy and comfortable their life together is.

“So many people like family, friends warned us, ‘The first year of marriage. You know, that’s the hardest,'” Taylor said. “And we were like, ‘Really? Okay’.”

“We’re grinning. We’re wondering, ‘When is he coming? We’re just waiting,'” Tay said.

“I hope it’s not a slow burn or something,” Taylor added. “It’s been pretty smooth so far.”

As for their anniversary, the couple put all plans to celebrate on hold while they juggled preparations for their big Lemons event. The idea for the gala — the first such event for their nonprofit, whose mission is to provide resources and support to people struggling with their mental health — actually came about while they were brainstorming ways to celebrate their anniversary.

“We thought of everything. We’re like, ‘We can go on this trip or that trip.’ But as we got closer and closer to him, we realized: ‘What do we love most?’ And we love and always have from the moment we met, planning parties, organizing events. We thrive on doing it together,” Taylor explained.

“So we’re like, ‘Okay, that community.’ We love our friends, family, our entire community and bringing people together. And last but not least, our passion for mental health,” he continued. “So it really clicked for us. It feels fitting for our first wedding anniversary to host our first Lemons gala.”

Although the couple have been busy overseeing the big event, they intend to squeeze in some time soon to celebrate together in private. “Maybe in a few weeks we’ll go on a little weekend or something,” Taylor said.

Okay, where do we want to go for a little while [getaway].”

They might even stay closer to home. “We like to stay in or just go out for dinner. We’re big foodies,” Tay said.
