TCA Awards 2023, TV Critics Awards Nominations, Date

The nominations for the 2023 TCA Awards, announced by the Television Critics Association (TCA) on Friday, June 30, highlighted major contenders such as “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and HBO’s “The Bear.”

TCA Awards 2023

The nominees for the 39th annual Television Critics Association (TCA) Awards have been unveiled, highlighting HBO’s significant presence. HBO/Max secured an impressive 20 nominations, beating out its closest competitor, FX, which received 10 nominations.

The leading contenders, with five nominations each, were HBO’s “Succession” and “The Last of Us,” as well as FX’s “The Bear.” Right behind them, ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” and Peacock’s “Poker Face” received four nominations. The TCAs hold a unique position among critics groups as they announce their nominees and winners in the run-up to the 2023 Emmy Awards.

In recent years, their nominations have shown a greater ability to predict a show’s reception at the Emmy Awards, particularly in terms of nominations rather than actual winners. For example, although “Abbott Elementary” won last year’s TCA awards for Program of the Year and Outstanding Comedy Achievement, it ended up losing the Emmy to “Ted Lasso.”

However, “Succession” was able to repeat its TCA drama win by winning the same award at the 2022 Emmy Awards. Additionally, Hulu’s “Dopesick” took home the TCA award for miniseries, thanks primarily to HBO’s “The White Lotus” competing in the drama series category at last year’s TCAs.

Today’s TCA nominations suggest that HBO’s “Succession,” “The Last of Us” and ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” are poised to be prominent contenders at the upcoming Emmy Awards. Furthermore, the nominations give significant recognition and momentum to FX’s “The Bear” and Peacock’s “Poker Face,” with the latter benefiting from increased visibility.

Surprisingly, the canceled series “The Other Two” made an unexpected appearance in the Program of the Year category, signaling newfound appreciation for this previously overlooked yet-to-be-Emmy-nominated series. Fans of the show are hoping that this recognition will lead to a change in her fortunes during the final season.

Another worthy mention goes to Disney+’s “Andorus,” which received nods in the Program of the Year and Outstanding Achievement in Drama categories, highlighting its strength and potential impact at the TCA Awards.
