Why is Teacher’s Day celebrated on September 5 in India?
On the auspicious occasion of Dr. Radhakrishnan’s birthday, his students and friends requested him to allow them to celebrate his birthday, but in reply, Dr. Radhakrishnan said, “Instead of celebrating my birthday separately, it would be a privilege to celebrate September 5 as the Day teacher”.
Dr. Radhakrishnan’s opinion for teachers was that the right kind of education can solve many ills of the society and the country. It is known that “teachers lay the foundations of a civilized and advanced society.” Their dedicated work and the pain they face in order for the students to become enlightened citizens deserve high recognition”.

Teachers’ Day 2023: Who is Dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan?
dr. Sarvepalli Radhakrishnan was born in 1888 to a middle-class Telugu Brahmin family in the Madras Presidency, British India (now in Tamil Nadu, India). He was the second son of Veera Samayya, a tehsildar in the zamindari. He completed his post-graduate studies in philosophy from the University of Madras and wrote a master’s thesis entitled “The Ethics of Vedanta and its Metaphysical Assumptions”, in which he said that the Vedanta system has ethical value.
In one of his major works he also showed that Indian philosophy, once translated into standard academic jargon, was worthy of being called philosophy by Western standards. And so he gained great respect in Indian philosophy.

He was also nominated to the Committee on International Cooperation of the League of Nations in 1931. And in 1947, when India became independent, Dr. Radhakrishnan represented India at UNESCO, and from 1949 to 1952 he was India’s ambassador to the Soviet Union.
He was elected to the Constituent Assembly of India and later became the first Vice President and finally the President of India from 1962 to 1967. He was awarded the Bharat Ratna in 1954, and in his memory, the University of Oxford started the Radhakrishnan Chevening Scholarships and the Radhakrishnan Memorial Award. He also received the German Bookseller’s Peace Prize in 1961.
The amazing thing is that he was a very humble person. When he became the President of India, the Rashtrapati Bhavan was open to all and people from all walks of life could meet him.
