Teachers Share Mean Things Students Have Said to Them: ‘Nothing Prepares You for the Audacity’

Teachers everywhere are connecting with a viral TikTok video of two teachers hilariously revealing the savage things their students have said to them.

Alissa, a California history teacher who runs @teachinginstyle on TikTok, and her colleague shared a video this week that has since garnered 3.5 million views and comments from fellow teachers detailing mean things their students said.

Alissa — who captioned the video, “Nothing prepares you for high school brashness” — kicked off the barrage of insults with a student attack on her single status: “The kid looked me dead in the eye and said, ‘That makes me wonder why you’re not married. .’ ”

Her colleague then discovered how routinely ungrateful a teenager was to her.

“At the end of each class, I ask my students what they are thankful for, and most students say things like ‘you’ or ‘mom’ or ‘the sun,’” she said. “[But] every day this student says, ‘I’m grateful to be able to leave this room.’ ”

During the video, the two teachers held onto the mean stuff with no problem, laughing each time they recited one.

Some were short and simple like, “A kid once told me he hoped I’d get hit by a bus,” while others used more imaginative phrases like, “A kid once told me he thought I’d actually be a really good teacher if I didn’t have attention like a little squirrel.”

Another student, meanwhile, didn’t even verbally reveal his disdain, choosing instead to go online and rate the teacher’s shoes. “A photo of my shoes that I wear every day to work ended up on a hate account. They are rated 1 out of 5.”

Meanwhile, some of the comments shared by teachers in the comment section also targeted the teachers’ outfits.

“I once wore a pair of yellow overalls and my high school friends told me I looked like a friend of Curious George. I haven’t worn them since,” said one.

Another teacher was also taunted by a cheerleader. “One of my favorite combinations was the green top with these yellow pants,” she wrote. “One of my cheerleaders said I looked like an elf friend. I haven’t worn it since.”
