The band was founded in 1963, and is best known for its hit single “Journey to the Center of the Mind”. The band broke up in 1975, and Nugent pursued a solo career. During his solo career he collaborated with a wide range of artists. He later joined the rock supergroup Damn Yankees. This band is best known for the songs “High Enough” and “Where You Going Now”. When Nugent relaunched his solo career in 1994, the band went on hiatus. They reformed at the end of the 1990s.

Nugent’s musical career began in 1964, with the formation of the rock group The Amboy Dukes in Chicago, Illinois. The band’s name is derived from the title of a novel by Irving Shulman. Nugent was the only permanent member of the band. “Journey to the Center of the Mind”, the band’s hit single, is well known. Before breaking up in 1975, the band released seven albums. Later, in 2009, the band reunited to perform at the Detroit Music Awards. They received an outstanding achievement award for their contribution to rock music.
After The Amboy Dukes broke up in 1975, Nugent pursued a solo career. He was signed by Epic Records. Ted Nugent (1975), Free-for-All (1976), Cat Scratch Fever (1977), Weekend Warriors (1978), State of Shock (1979) and Scream Dream (1980) were his solo albums released on Epic Records.
