Teen Dies Months After His Brain Cancer Is Misdiagnosed as Ear Infection: ‘Devastating’

The teenager died after the doctors misly diagnosed their terminal cancer as an ear infection.

In October 2024. Jac sexton began to experience severe headaches, double vision, disgusted speech and “complete” loss of balance. After multiple visits to the doctor, a 19-year-old from southern Wales rejected the symptoms as an ear infection from a recent glandular fever, his family explained on the Gofundme page. He was prescribed antibiotics and sent home.

However, the days later Sexton was at home when he collapsed and was transported to Prince Charles Hospital and received an emergency CT scan. The family received “devastating” results and was diagnosed with a glioblasta by sexton after a non -operative tumor was detected inside the brain.

Glioblastoma, also known as GBM, is a rare form of terminal cancer that kills more than 10,000 Americans a year, according to the national brain tumor society. It is the same type of cancer, of which the John McCain senator died in August 2018.

The disease does not have known drug, and standard treatment involves the surgery of tumor removal (if possible), followed by radiation and chemotherapy. Those who are diagnosed with a malignant tumor have a medium survival rate of about 14 to 14.5 months.

However, “by miracle and fighting left to Jac, he responded well to treatment and gradually took off his sedation. He showed good signs that his brain damage was not done and his lungs began to be treated from collapse,” said the family. “In all his 30 years, a doctor Icu has never seen the case of such or such a positive outcome.”

Sexton was later transferred to the Noah’s ARC Cancer Center at Wales University Hospital, which provides children with palliative care for life diseases. He stayed there for five weeks before returning home.

On February 28, the family announced that Sexton had died at home, surrounded by his loved ones.

“After the most common heroic struggle, against the most serious diseases, our warrior Jac died heartily at home on February 25,” they wrote on Gofundme. “Jac’s incredible personality and sense of humor have remained with him, despite his illness, and is something we will nurture as a family. Jac lives in all of us and we are so proud of him and his incredible strength.”
