Suffolk Police today released footage of the pair’s movements before the attack as they snuck through Ipswich town center on January 17, 2023.

Dressed in hoodies with their faces covered by masks and brandishing large knives, police said Howell and Hammett found Mr Quigley and attacked him.

Officers explained that Hammett ran straight toward the victim and stabbed him, while Howell chased after one of his friends who ran into a nearby convenience store.

Police have not released the actual footage of the fatal attack.

However, other dramatic footage captured the moment Howell stormed into a clothes shop with a huge machete as he tried to locate Mr Quigley’s friend.

The enraged killer is seen running desperately between the clothes rails before losing another man and returning to the street.

Meanwhile, the video also shows Hammett – who stabbed Mr Quigley at least six times – running from the scene of the crime, which happened at around 3.35pm in Westgate Street.

Mr Quigley managed to stagger across the road for help but later died at the scene.

An autopsy concluded he suffered fatal wounds to his torso, chest and abdomen in what police called a “senseless act of extreme violence.”

Hammett and Howell appeared at Ipswich Crown Court today to be sentenced to life in prison with minimum terms of 24 and 20 years respectively.

Both were found guilty of Mr Quigley’s murder on January 26 after a tense trial that lasted more than five weeks.

Both were also found guilty of possessing an offensive weapon in a public place.

Howell was further convicted of threatening another person with a bladed object.

The court heard that the motive behind the attack was likely to be a rival gang from Norwich.

Mr Quigley was associated with a gang called ‘OTM’, which stands for ‘Only Money’.

Hammett was linked to a rival gang called ‘3rdside’, while Howell had links to the Nacton gang in Ipswich – also known as ‘IP3’ – which the prosecution claimed was working with 3rdside.

Before the attack, calls were made between two people belonging to 3rdside and another with IP3.

Immediately following these calls, both Howell and Hammett received calls from their respective gangs.

Within minutes, the pair of thugs left their homes in Ipswich and St Andrew and headed for the meeting point to begin locating their victim.

CCTV footage captured almost all their movements before the attack until they fled the scene and fled home.

Detective Chief Inspector Tam Burgess called the attack “a horrific and completely senseless act of extreme violence” as he paid tribute to the family and the dignity of the victim during the trial.

“I am still stunned by the brazen manner in which Hammett and Howell committed this heinous crime in such a public place, with numerous members of the public nearby and in full view of CCTV cameras.

“James Quigley was simply walking around town with his friends when he was exposed to this unprovoked attack and had no opportunity to defend himself. He had no chance.”

He added: “Across the country we are seeing too many deaths of this nature. This senseless loss of young lives must stop.”
