The Bear Season 2 Ending Explained: Where Did We Leave Carmy, Sydney and Cousin Richie?

Season 2 finale Bear made the audience scream “Yes chef!” to “Oh no, chef!”

Centered on the restaurant of the same name, the latest season of the Hulu drama ended with both a bang and a whimper: While the Bear enjoyed a relatively successful opening night, Sydney (Ayo Edebiri), Marcus (Lionel Boyce) and Richie (Ebon Moss-Bachrach) with professional and personal pride , owner and chef Carmy (Jeremy Allen White) spirals and sabotages her own chance at happiness with ER doctor and childhood friend Claire (Molly Gordon).

The season, which was full of fear, drama, tension and triumph, cleaned up at the 2023 Emmys just months after its release. Bear won Outstanding Comedy Series while White, Edebiri and Moss-Bachrach also won in the acting categories.

Now, the award-winning series returns to Hulu for a third season on June 26. But before you start your long-awaited binge-watch, here’s a recap of the Season 2 finale — including Carmy’s new restaurant and his love life.

At the opening night of “Friends and Family,” things quickly go wrong: Josh disappears, they run out of clean forks, the toilet explodes on Natalie (Abby Elliott), the seven-fish dish gets cold and has to be thrown out, and Sydney kicks Tina (Liza Colón- Zayas) to remake the steak.

However, things really goes awry when Carmy, after an argument with Sydney, is locked in the walk-in freezer – a direct result of him procrastinating on fixing the doorknob all season up to this point. While Carmy is out of commission, Sydney comes in to fill his role, while cousin Richie takes orders, greets guests (and gives Uncle Jimmy, played by Oliver Platt, a chocolate banana). He’s showing tremendous progress professionally and personally, even telling the team he loves them as they get down to work.

Natalie and Carmy’s mother, Donna (Jamie Lee Curtis), arrives, and when Natalie’s husband, Pete (Chris Witaske), sees her outside, he tries to convince her to come inside. Donna, wracked with guilt, tells Pete, “No I don’t deserve to see how good this is, I don’t want to hurt it.” Pete eventually confesses, and Donna leaves – but not before Pete accidentally discovers that Natalie is pregnant, not realizing that Natalie never told her mother the news.

Marcus ends up finding Josh (Alex Moffat) outside doing drugs behind the restaurant. He told Sydney about the incident and got her permission to fire him, which eased the tension they had earlier when he asked her out and she declined.

Trapped in a walk-in cooler at the restaurant’s biggest dinner party yet, Carmy reminisces about working in New York under a constantly berating chef (Joel McHale), his paralyzing self-doubt getting the best of him. He pours his heart out to Tina, referencing what he said at an Al-Anon meeting earlier in the season about “fun and pleasure” — but this time, instead of looking for it in a healthy way, he says he doesn’t deserve to have either and that he will only provide it to others with his work. He berates himself for continuing his relationship with Claire to what he believes is the detriment of his restaurant’s success.

“I wasn’t here. What the hell was I thinking, like I was going to be in a relationship? I’m a fucking psycho! That’s how I function,” he fumed. “I’m the best because I didn’t have any of this fucking bulls—, right? I could focus and I could concentrate… No amount of good is worth how horrible this feels! It’s just a complete waste of fucking time!”

Tina wasn’t listening at the time, but Claire was, coming into the kitchen to check on him after the staff told her where he was. She tells him, “I’m sorry you feel that way, Carm,” and leaves crying as Carmy keeps calling out to her.

Claire tearfully says goodbye to Richie in the dining room and leaves. Richie returns to the kitchen and gets into an argument with Carmy, at one point calling him “Donna” and telling him, “I don’t understand why you can’t just let something good happen in your f—- life.”

Still trapped in the freezer, Carmy finally hears the voicemail Claire left for him earlier that day, telling him she’s “always had a big crush” on him. “I’m so excited for you and so thrilled for you. I know it can be hard to find a moment to feel good about what you’re doing right in the middle of it, when you’re in the middle of it, but uh … I just hope you know I’m so proud of you, and that Mikey would be so proud of you, and I just, um, really love you.”

Heartbroken, Carmy throws her phone and cries.

Meanwhile, Marcus proudly hangs an “EVERY SECOND COUNTS” sign on his wall from Luca (Will Poulter) and misses several calls from his sick mother’s nurse. Sydney, finally overcome with the anxiety and stress of the premiere, throws up several times behind the restaurant, where her father (Robert Townsend) tells her he’s proud of her for finding “what” she was supposed to do. Richie smokes a cigarette and smiles, pleased and proud of the team’s work.

And finally, the man with the chainsaw comes to open the freezer door and let Carmy out.

What happens to Carmy and Claire at the end Bear season 2?

Carmy and Claire’s budding relationship seems to be at least temporarily over after the second season finale. Claire, who had left Carmy a voicemail earlier that day telling him she loved him for the first time, overheard Carmy lamenting that their relationship was a “waste of time” and distracted him from his work. She leaves the restaurant crying, and when Carmy hears her voicemail, he cries too.

In addition, Gordon will reprise her role in Bear season 3, so maybe there’s hope for Carmy and “Claire Bear” yet.

Sydney vomits near the dumpster behind the restaurant after a night out with friends and family, mostly her anxiety and nerves from the big night manifesting physically. Her father runs towards her to see if she is okay, and she assures him that she is. He compliments the success of the soft opening and tells her, “Honey, that’s the thing.”

It’s a throwback to Sydney’s previous conversations with her father, in which he expressed doubt about the restaurant’s potential for success. Now she realizes that this is “the thing” she needs to do. She takes a break from puking to beam with pride, then goes back to puking.

What happens to Richie in the Bear season 2?

Richie has one of the most redeeming arcades in the series Bear season 2 Heartbroken after learning that his ex and the mother of his daughter, Tiffany (Gillian Jacobs), is engaged, he finds a way professionally. After resisting change and clashing with Carmy over Carmy’s misplaced devotion to Carmy’s late brother Mikey, Richie spends a week interning at the Michelin-starred restaurant Ever (an actual diner in Chicago). Learning under Chef Terry (guest star Olivia Colman), Richie finds a new purpose in his job, which brings a new sense of calm to the temperamental manager.

When Bear season 3 premiere?

Carmy makes Sydney a partner in the restaurant, and the kitchen is still tense, with Carmy and Richie fighting over handmade bowls of different sizes. There are menu changes, a birthday surprise from Richie (who we also see bonding with his daughter) and Uncle Jimmy arguing with Natalie about his loan. Even when things are going well at The Bear, Bear always brings drama.
