The D’Amelios Tease the Most ‘Surprising’ Part of Working with Your Family on a Shoe Line (Exclusive)

D’Amelio Loves Shoes: Charli D’Amelio has a habit of “borrowing” a pair or two from her big sister Dixie D’Amelio; mom Heidi D’Amelio is coy when asked exactly how many shoes they own together as a family—even dad Marc D’Amelio, who prefers a low-key look, can pack a cool punch.

So it’s no surprise that their brand, D’Amelio Footwear, has all the shoes you’d want in your closet.

The latest to come from the company is the spring Cork Bottom collection of platforms, slides, sandals and heels — now exclusively at retail at an impressive pop-up shop in NYC until March 10th, ahead of the official launch.

Charli, 19, Dixie, 22, Heidi, 52, and Marc, 55, sat down with PEOPLE for an exclusive chat at the SoHo space — known as a lush garden-inspired shoe haven — about the new line and why the collaborators are such a good fit and as a family.

“From the beginning we wanted something that was comfortable and also modern,” Dixie says of the spring designs.

From Heidi’s point of view, seasonal styles are made for shoe lovers who want to experiment with different types of heels in their everyday style. She also describes the collection as “breathable” because the silhouettes have a light feel and soft memory foam in the soles.

Running a family business has its warning signs, but Charli can truly say that they don’t often collide.

“It’s just normal family stuff, like I show up late and my dad’s like, ‘Dude, come on,’ and I’m like, ‘Sorry!’ It’s honestly pretty easy to work together, which I think is surprising to a lot of people. It’s easy to have those difficult conversations. We always correspond in the family group chat, so if we need to talk about something, it’s very easy.”

Challenge? Getting everyone to be in the same place at the same time (when you’re as full as D’Amelios, you can imagine the scheduling that goes on behind the scenes).

“We were trying to make a final selection [for the spring collection]. We’re on Zoom and they were in different time zones,” Heidi says, pointing to her children, “and we have a shoe model walking in front of a laptop on the floor. Because of the nature of our lives, we have to be creative in how we can all still be a part of it and have our roles but also do our other jobs.”

Reality TV stars have a genuine kinship that’s as palpable in real life as it is on screen — and it takes on new life when you hear them talk about each other.

Charli tells PEOPLE that her dad has been her personal “role model” in business, while Dixie, who feels they’ve grown closer as a family, says the two are “very lucky” to have their parents by their side professionally and personally.

The Dancing with the stars Champ also beams when she talks about her mom’s ability to “eat” on camera, which is her way of admiring Heidi’s confidence on set.

Heidi and Marc also picked up a few things from their Generation Z daughters. What they agree on: Sometimes it’s better to ditch the “parents know best” mentality.

“I’m always open to what Dixie and Charli have to say about how to run things,” says Marc.

“They are good people. [Their] fashion and approach to work, it’s different from the way we were brought up,” adds Heidi, who is all ears when it comes to her kids’ unfiltered style advice. “I’m glad they took on the roles of Marc and I and kind of made it their own.”

With D’Amelio Shoes located on Greene Street for the weekend (call a cab! Catch that train! Run, don’t walk! Because this is an experience you don’t want to miss.), D’Amelios are “super excited” to connect with their fans face to face.

“Being here and seeing people looking at shoes and loving shoes, as well as meeting the people who make us who we are, is really exciting,” shares Charli.

Bringing their website to life was no easy feat, but Shopify (which powers D’Amelio Footwear’s e-commerce platform) made sure things ran smoothly.

“The fact that they have this amazing space and they gave us the opportunity to come here, we couldn’t have done something this big without an amazing company like Shopify,” says Marc.
