Evidence is mounting that Aubrey Plaza is actually playing the personification of death in “Agatha All the Time.” In retrospect, it’s hard to believe that the MCU was wary of the more fantastical side of Marvel Comics. Gone are the days when Thor joked that he came from a place where science and wizardry were the same thing; now, we have gods and monsters, as well as cosmic beings like the Living Tribunal and Eternity, among others. In the comics, many cosmic forces have been personified – including Death herself, who is traditionally depicted as Thanos’ love interest. The fundamental problem, however, is that Leo Vidal has no direct parallel in the comics themselves. This hurts them. She is my scar.” Agatha’s reaction makes it clear that she is who Rio says she is, and she goes to stretch her legs. But what is this “job”? The most likely explanation is that it is the death of Agatha’s son; Rio did her job, taking Nicholas Scratch’s soul and destroying her relationship with Agatha.
What Rio’s Death Means for the Marvel Universe

In comics, Death is an abstract universe but personified – and often shown as a lover. Thanos is best known for his lust for death, although Deadpool is one of his rivals. The Marvel Universe avoided the idea of using an accurate death from the comics by changing Thanos’ motivations. It’s fitting for the Marvel Universe to introduce a version of Death as a wild, fiery lover. The interesting question, though, is whether there was some change in the idea of the comic? Has Leo been Death all along, or has she taken over that role, serving more as an avatar than a personification. The latter might explain why she can call herself the Green Witch; she might just be a Green Witch who’s been absorbed by Death in some way.
What about Agatha mentioning that Leo would be “breaking the rules” in some way by killing her? This could be a hint at the relationship between Agatha and Rio; perhaps they swore an oath to each other at some point. Alternatively, it could also reveal the inherent limitations of Death’s powers in the Marvel Universe, implicitly explaining why she hasn’t been seen before. Death may be prohibited from directly killing people, but only from watching or encouraging others to do it on her behalf.
Of course, this twist is full of irony. Death was an integral part of Thanos’ story in the comics, but the Marvel Universe didn’t introduce its version of death until about five years after Thanos’ story was completed. It’s a measure of how comfortable Marvel Studios is with the supernatural and fantastical, no longer worrying about losing audiences if it goes too far.
