The Holiday Costume Designer Says the 2006 Rom-Com’s Longevity Has Been the ‘Icing on the Cake’ (Exclusive)

Holiday has become a Christmas classic since its release 18 years ago.

For costume designer Marlene Stewart, the enduring popularity of the 2006 film is simply another beautiful layer to the unforgettable experience of working with an “incredibly talented” cast, including Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black, Cameron Diaz and Eli Wallach.

“I think for me, being able to work with these actors is one of the greatest joys of being a costume designer, having the opportunity to work with incredibly talented, interesting and creative [people]this kind of team. It was wonderful,” she told PEOPLE in an exclusive interview.

“All in all, it was just the icing on the cake that the movie became kind of a holiday classic, and luckily, I watch it again and again every year,” adds Stewart, noting that he loves seeing new audiences discover the Nancy Meyer-directed film thanks to streaming. .

“I can’t tell you, even the younger generation, the next generation, everybody says, ‘Oh, Holiday.’ So I’m happy that I had the opportunity to work on it and I’m happy that it comes out every year and you get a chance to relive it,” says Stewart. “It was so much fun to work on, and it’s fun to translate.”

“The idea was to have a look that was luxurious and fun,” explains Stewart. “She is a professional woman here. At that time, even though 20 years have passed, [it was about]’What do women wear to work? What are the standards? How does that change?’ ”

Stewart says Diaz, 52, and the film’s other stars influenced their characters’ looks. She says the collaborative dialogue between costume designer and actor is incredibly important on set.

“For a lot of actresses, actors, they find the character in the clothes. ‘Yeah, that’s right. No, that’s fringe. She wouldn’t do that. Yeah, this makes sense. This shows a certain part of her personality,'” explains Stewart. There is so much feedback. That is so important. You want [the stars] feel comfortable.”
