The Lawrence Brothers Reveal One Way Their Parents Kept Them Humble Amid Child Stardom

The Lawrence brothers brought a big family reunion moment to the 90s Con in Daytona.

On Friday, September 13, Joey, Matthew and Andrew Lawrence reunited for a panel moderated by PEOPLE’s Dory Jackson, where they discussed their close relationship and their former sitcom, Brotherly love.

Speaking of growing up in the spotlight – where Joey performed The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson when he was just 6 years old — the brothers attributed their stability to the “family unit.”

“Our parents are great,” Joey said. “Grandparents were with us a lot and we really had a big group that was constantly traveling and being isolated and working at work. Work was primarily a hobby, treated like baseball on a road trip or a sport for a lot of kids. It was never a life .”

Joey continued how his mom maintained a sense of normalcy for the trio.

“She enrolled me in my private school in Philly. When Andy was born, she took Matt and I out of work for three years,” he continued. “It was always a hobby, never our lives. Our life that we lived. That perspective really kept our perspective right so that successes and failures never predicted our success and failure as a human being. We had them, but it never had to deal with with work. That was the most important thing in our ability to navigate.”

To that end, despite their fame, Matthew and Joey actually shared a room until the latter turned 16 – complete with bunk beds.

“I think Joe had had enough when I convinced my mom to get a dog and the dog was in the room sleeping with me,” Matthew said with a laugh.

“There were other things,” Joey added. “I was 16! I should have had some space.”

Brotherly love featured a trio playing the fictional Roman brothers. In the series, the eldest brother of the family returns to help run the family business after his father’s death. It premiered on NBC in 1995, where it ran for one season, before moving to The WB (now The CW) for its final season.

Despite their short duration, the real-life siblings’ star continued to rise after that — and they recently reunited to host Brotherly love podcast, which launched last year.
