The Lumineers' Jeremiah Fraites Explores a New Creative Craving: 'It's Definitely a Passion of Mine' (Exclusive)

The Lumineers’ Jeremiah Fraites has long loved a good movie.

“I especially love the ones with stories that involve tragedy, heartbreak and joy, with a hint of sadness laced with a little bit of hope and optimism,” Fraites, 38, says in an interview with PEOPLE. “Films that come to mind are films like Eternal sunshine of a flawless mind or Shawshank Redemption. I would love to make a film like that.”

Granted, Fraites already seems to have his hands full as co-founder/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist of The Lumineers, best known for hits like “Ho Hey,” “Ophelia” and “Stubborn Love.” Fraites also divides his personal time between homes in Italy and Colorado.

“Even if you’re faced with the 10-second attention span of the 2020 generation, there will always be people who will listen to an entire album cover to cover on vinyl or listen to it on their streaming service front to back,” explains Fraites. “I’m going to cater to that person because I still believe in the album, and I still believe in that kind of vibe.”

It’s a similar vibe that has been sewn through the tapestry of The Lumineers for many years. “I’m approaching these piano piano instrumentals the same way I approach writing a Lumineers album,” says Fraites, who will celebrate The Lumineers’ 20th anniversary next year with longtime bandmate Wesley Schultz. “I think we’ve always been fans of recording albums. It was always important to make an album so that you have a sequence that means something.”

Five things to know about Lumineers

Meaning piano piano 2, Fraites says he made music on multiple pianos in multiple locations, from Rio de Janeiro to Boston to Denver to the Catskill Mountains. “You must comply that piano,” says Fraites. “That’s what I love about these instrumental records.”

But there are also other sounds Piano Piano 2 — sounds that he says he would never want to miss experiencing.

“There is a sense of noise in the background,” concludes Fraites. “In the song ‘Ghosts’ you can hear this fantastic cellist named Rubin Kodheli taking a deep breath with a breath and at first I thought we should get rid of them. But then I realized it’s humanity.”
