On December 11, Peacock announced that an adaptation of the Emmy-winning football series was officially in development.
The world was first introduced to the fictional Panthers team in the 2004 film Bright Friday nightdirected by Peter Berg and starring Billy Bob Thorton, Tim McGraw, Amber Heard and Connie Britton. Inspired by Buzz Bissinger’s 1990 bestseller of the same name, the film won Best Sports Film at the 2005 ESPY Awards. “As soon as we met, it was clear that the choice was perfect,” the actor said of his co-star in a 2011 NPR interview.
Although many faces have changed, with a cast that includes Minka Kelly, Jesse Plemons and Michael B. Jordan, the premise of the story has always remained the same: a close-knit, small-town Texas community where high school football is not just a game but a way of life.

Although members of the show’s creative team return (including Berg as director, Jason Katims as showrunner, and Brian Grazer as executive producer), the new iteration Bright Friday night it is slated to have an all-new cast.
This is not so surprising, considering that more than 10 years have passed since the last one Bright Friday night episode aired, and Britton even said that a reboot with the original cast would be “kind of weird.”

We have only good memories. Why risk going back and then hating each other.”

According to Peacock’s announcement, the adaptation begins not with a triumphant score, but with a paralyzing storm.
“The potential series takes place in the aftermath of a devastating hurricane, when a tattered high school football team and their damaged interim coach make an improbable bid for the Texas High School State Championship,” reads the show’s logline. “Through their unexpected rise, the football team becomes a beacon of light for their city.”

Peter Berg is directing a new one Bright Friday night reboot for Peacock. He not only has a long history with the story itself — he also directed the film and was an executive producer of the hit series — but also has a personal connection to the book that inspired it all: the author is his cousin.
In an interview for Milford Daily NewsBerg said his screenplay is the eighth attempt to turn Bissinger’s novel, which chronicles the Odessa Permian High School football team’s 1988 season, into a movie.
“For me (the book) truly represented a moment in my life that was very special,” said the director. “There’s a scene where a father looks at his child and says, ‘Just don’t miss this.’ That kind of sums it up.”

After 76 episodes and five seasons, Bright Friday night last aired in 2011. The finale featured the Dillon Panthers playing their last game before Coach Taylor and Tami left for her new job in Philadelphia.
In a flash-forward, viewers learn that the team has won the state championship, Jess has moved to Dallas to coach, and Tim and Billy are building a house together.
While the ending leaves room for the return of most of the show’s beloved characters, the reboot will reportedly feature an all-new cast.

While a release date for the reboot has yet to be announced, fans can watch all five seasons of the original Bright Friday night series — and the 2004 movie — on Netflix.
