The 35-year-old avid runner and TikToker died on Sunday, just moments after competing in the Disneyland Halloween Half Marathon.
Anaheim Police Sergeant Matt Sutter confirms to PEOPLE that Bobby Graves — who goes by the name “Caleb” on social media — passed out shortly after crossing the finish line of the race, which took place early in the morning amid a record-breaking, triple-digit heat wave in Southern California.
“The race started at 5 a.m., I don’t know what start wave he was in, but he crossed the finish line around 7 a.m.,” Sutter says, adding that the timeline means Graves finished the race in less than two hours, “which is really good time.”
Sutter adds: “As soon as he crossed the finish line, he started clutching his chest. One of the workers noticed and ran over and caught him before he collapsed.”

As is typical of the popular race, medics were on standby and immediately rushed to Graves.
“Fire and rescue personnel were on scene,” Sutter tells PEOPLE. “The emergency services couldn’t have come faster.”
Sutter adds that doctors “noticed that he was in cardiac arrest, took life-saving measures and immediately transported him to the hospital.”
“They worked on him for an hour, but he was pronounced dead at the hospital,” Sutter tells PEOPLE.
In a video he posted to his more than 18,000 TikTok followers just a day before his death, Graves spoke about the high temperatures in California ahead of the run, saying: “The Disneyland half marathon — the Halloween half marathon — is tomorrow, and I’m a little worried right now. ”
“I went outside today around 2:00 – which is probably the hottest part of the day – and it was 90-something degrees,” Graves said in the video, posted on his @calebgtravels account.
Elsewhere, he talked about his “sensitivity” to the heat, saying: “I have a certain sensitivity, I don’t know if it’s temporary or long-term, to the heat. Because I was outside for about 20 minutes, walking my dog, and it was hot, but I felt fine… and then about 10 minutes after I got back inside I just passed out.”
“I just fell asleep – no control over my body. It was heat exhaustion, it’s only happened to me once before,” he added. “I don’t know what’s going on, but I’m really hoping to get through the race tomorrow morning.”
In another video posted on TikTok, Graves shared himself picking up his race number before the event and imploring other runners to “remember it’s going to be HOT!”
“Stay hydrated and listen to your body,” Graves added in the caption. “Good luck to all runners!”
Sutter tells PEOPLE that “there are no other reports that I’m aware of” of others collapsing or needing medical attention at the Disneyland race, adding that the race took place early in the morning and not during the “full heat of the day.”

“I’ve talked to medical professionals who say that during a big race like this, one or two heart problems can happen. But fatalities are rare,” adds Sutter.
Sutter adds that the Orange County Coroner’s Office is now conducting an autopsy and will eventually release the report, though that could take weeks or months.
Graves received his law degree from Georgetown University and worked as a litigation associate at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati, according to the law firm’s website.
