Toby Keith was a cult country star, but he was a caring father to his children.
The singer of “Red Solo Cup” was the father of three children with his wife Tricia Lucus. The singer adopted Tricia’s first daughter, Shelley, 43, after the two married in 1984. The couple then welcomed their first child together, Krystal, 38, in September 1985. Their third child, a son named Stelen, 26 , was born in April 1997.
Toby passed away on February 5, 2024 after being diagnosed with stomach cancer two and a half years earlier. He was 62 years old. His family released a statement on x (formerly Twitter) announcing his death hours after he passed away.
“Toby Keith passed away peacefully last night, February 5, surrounded by his family,” the statement read. “He fought his fight with grace and courage.”

Before he died, one of the things Toby was most proud of was his family and how “great” all the kids had grown up. He told PEOPLE in 2010 that despite growing up in the spotlight, his children are doing well.
“Everyone in the family is good,” he said. “I was raised by good parents and I have great children. They don’t have any problems – none.”
“They all grew up with me as I was successful, but they weren’t attached to that part of the job,” he added.

Toby’s older daughter, Shelley, was born in 1980 to her mother and was adopted by the country singer after they married.
Although Shelley is the most private of Toby’s children, she joined her family at the 2015 SwingDish Launch Event in Las Vegas.
Shelley got married and had a child with her husband, making Toby a grandfather for the first time. The “Should Have Been a Cowboy” singer posed with this entire family, including his grandchildren, for Thanksgiving 2023.

Toby and Tricia welcomed their first child together, Krystal, on September 30, 1985. Although her siblings are named Covel, which was Toby’s birth name, she chose to adopt her father’s stage name instead.
Krystal followed in her father’s footsteps, pursuing a music career. She started when her dad introduced her to his song “Mockingbird” from 2004, which they performed together at the 38th CMA Awards that same year.
Krystal continued to create her own music, releasing the album, Whiskey and laceIn 2013, the record included her hit song “Daddy Dance with Me”, which she first performed for her father at her wedding to Andrew Sandubrae in 2010.
“I wrote it for a father-daughter dance at my own wedding and we just shot the video,” she told Nashville Gab in 2013. “It was an amazing experience.”
After graduating from the University of Oklahoma, Krystal stayed in the state and is now raising her family, which includes her two daughters: Kirby and Hensley. The girls enjoy skiing together and celebrating the holidays with their family.

Toby and Tricia welcomed their youngest child and only son on April 17, 1997. Stelen said that from an early age, people pointed out that he was similar to his father in many ways.
“Tell me where I got that from. They always wonder who he is, and then they meet my dad and tell him that Stelen is just another you,” he wrote in the description on Instagram under an old photo of the two.
Like his sister, Stelen also graduated from the University of Oklahoma where he studied entrepreneurship and venture management, according to his LinkedIn.
Now, Stelen co-owns multiple businesses, including 405 Burger Bar, Hollywood Corners, Tequila Chulos and Sellout Crowd. The latter is a sports news network that focuses on sports in Oklahoma.
On November 6, 2021, Stelen married his wife Haley Covel in Las Vegas with his family by his side. Shortly after, his father announced his cancer diagnosis, and Stelen posted a wedding photo with his parents on the special day, thanking fans for their support.
“Thank you all for your kind words and prayers regarding my father’s announcement yesterday,” he wrote in the caption. “He’s a fighter, he’s taken every measure to mitigate it and he needs a break to get back to himself.”
