News about Tommy Raskin

Suuba M. Demby ’22 remembers Professor Thomas B. “Tommy” Raskin saying, “Shouldn’t we all do everything we can to help those less fortunate than ourselves?” during a discussion about part of Harvard’s renowned “Justice” course this fall.

Raskin, however, stood out because, unlike other people, he not only advocated for the creation of a more just world, but also actively advocated for it, Demby believes. Because of this, she was “impressed and taken aback by how genuine she was as a person” and not “surprised” when she discovered a few weeks later that Raskin had donated to Oxfam on behalf of every one of her students.

Raskin, a sophomore at Harvard Law School, died on December 31 at the age of 25. According to a family spokesman, the cause of death was suicide after a long battle with depression.

Raskin’s friends and family said he will be remembered as a visionary who showed an intense commitment to justice and truth, but who had an easy way of communicating with people that made them feel heard and valued. Raskin was unwaveringly enthusiastic about helping the world’s poor, they said.

Raskin’s family and friends understood his desire to improve the world in the same way that Demby did.

In an interview with The Crimson, his father, US Rep. Jamin Ben “Jamie” Raskin ’83 (D-Md.), noted that college is a time when people think about moral philosophy and morality. But often these considerations and observations remain academic; Tommy always wanted to make sure he put his new views into practice.

In an obituary for their son earlier this month, Jamie Raskin and his wife, Sarah B. Raskin, both graduates of Harvard Law School, recalled a young man with “a perfect heart, a perfect soul, a sense of incredibly brave and ruthless in humor and a brilliantly brilliant mind.”

Raskin earned a bachelor’s degree in history, served as president of the Amherst Political Union, received a Kellogg Award, and produced “a compelling thesis on the intellectual history of the animal rights movement,” according to his parents, who published a memoir for him. Raskin graduated from Amherst College in 2017.

Raskin served on the board of Effective Altruism and was a member of the Harvard Animal Law Society, as well as teaching this fall for General Education 1171: “Justice: Ethics in the Age of Pandemic and Racial Calculation.”
