Tracee Ellis Ross and Bel Powley Play Cutthroat Journalists in Cold Copy Trailer (Exclusive)

Tracee Ellis Ross and Bel Powley risk everything for a great story in their upcoming film Cold copy.

In theaters and on demand from January 26, the thriller follows Mia Scott (Powley), a struggling journalism student desperate to impress ruthless reporter Diane Heger (Ross) — even if it means getting her attention by faking a report.

PEOPLE has the exclusive first trailer for Cold copywritten and directed by Roxine Helberg in her feature directorial debut.

“Journalism is not a calling,” Diane asks the class in the opening moments. “It’s a person.”

Cold copy “tells the story of two motivated women who push the boundaries of journalistic integrity in order to deliver a compelling and ultimately scandalous exposé,” according to the official synopsis from distributor Vertical.

The new trailer offers a glimpse into Mia’s search for a juicy story, which leads her to dig into the mysterious background of “precocious teenager” Igor Nowak (Jacob Tremblay). We also see Diane teaching Mia how to manipulate subjects and readers – and possibly manipulating Mia herself.

“With increasing pressure from Diana to outdo her peers, Mia finds a new angle for her latest story about an unsuspecting subject,” the synopsis continues. “But her new approach involves manipulating his story — and the truth itself.”

In his statement, screenwriter and director Helberg emphasized this topic. “Making my first feature film, I set out to explore the personal cost of manipulating the truth,” said the writer-director, who previously made short films and assisted the late Jean-Marc Vallée on Big little lies and Sharp objects.

When Cold copy premiering at the 2023 Tribeca Film Festival in June, he spoke with Ross Diversity “how narrative can change the truth.”

Reviewing the film in June, Deadline critic Damon Wise drew a parallel between Cold copy and the 2014 Jake Gyllenhaal thriller Night crawlerwriting, “Roxine Helberg’s satisfying feature debut returns to the same dark sources… of corruption and power.”

Ross also starred in a recent awards contender American fiction and a holiday hit Candy Cane Lane. Powley received numerous award nominations for her performance as Miep Gies in the 2023 miniseries A little light.

Cold copy is in select theaters and on demand on January 26. It stars Nesta Cooper, James Tupper and Ekaterina Baker.
