Troy Smith was born on July 20, 1984 in Columbus, Ohio and was raised by his mother and two brothers before moving to the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland. He was interested in football from a young age and played for the Glenville A’s as a running back and tight end.

He spent the first two years at St. Edward in Lakewood, Ohio, but after being hit in the head during a varsity basketball game, Smith transferred to Glenville High School.

Ted Ginn coached him shortly after graduation, and Smith and Ginn went on to play together at Ohio State, where he was drafted after his junior year.
