Troy Smith was born on July 20, 1984 in Columbus, Ohio and was raised by his mother and two brothers before moving to the Glenville neighborhood of Cleveland. He was interested in football from a young age and played for the Glenville A’s as a running back and tight end.
He spent the first two years at St. Edward in Lakewood, Ohio, but after being hit in the head during a varsity basketball game, Smith transferred to Glenville High School.
Ted Ginn coached him shortly after graduation, and Smith and Ginn went on to play together at Ohio State, where he was drafted after his junior year.

Smith developed an interest in football in Cleveland, and began playing in college. Shortly after graduation, he was invited to participate in the Elite 11 competition, which featured eleven of the top-ranked high school quarterbacks in the United States. In his senior year, he threw for 969 yards and 12 touchdowns, Smith played alongside the current San Francisco 49er, Troy was gifted in many ways, not only in football but also in basketball, he played basketball for three years and ran track high, jump , long and 1,600 meter relay.
Smith was recruited by West Virginia and accepted the last scholarship available in Ohio State’s football recruiting class. Smith started the season opener against Washington as a scat back and returner, finishing with fourteen rushing yards and 83 punt return yards, and NFL scouts noticed him as an athlete. When Zwick was injured halfway through the season, he took over as the starter and won four of five games before being suspended for violating an unspecified team rule prior to the Alamo Bowl.
Troy lost just two games during the 2005 regular season, and Smith was named the 2006 Most Valuable Player by his teammates and received the Davey O’Brien Award. Troy totaled 1,151 yards of offense, two runs and seven passes in three games against Michigan.
