Tushar Gandhi was an Indian writer. He is the son of Arun Manilal Gandhi and the great-grandson of Indian lawyer and nationalist leader Mahatma Gandhi. He is famous for establishing the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation in Vadodara, Gujarat.

His great-grandmother Kasturba Gandhi was an Indian political activist. She was engaged to Mahatma Gandhi when she was seven and married him in May 1883, when she was 14.
His grandfather, Manila Mohandas Gandhi, served as editor of the Indian Opinion newspaper. He died of a stroke in Phoenix, South Africa, on April 5, 1956, at the age of 63.
His grandmother Sushila Mashruwala died in 1956 at the age of 82.

In 2022, he launched a book called “The Lost Diary of Kastba, My Dad”, which is based on the diary written by his great-grandmother Kastba Gandhi.

In 1996, he was appointed president of the Lok Seva Trust, a trust established in central Mumbai to promote the welfare of textile mill workers. In 1998, he became the founder and chairman of the Mahatma Gandhi Foundation, now based in Mumbai. In 2000, he played himself in Kamal Haasan’s Tamil-Hindi period crime drama Hey Ram.
In 2001, Tushar Gandhi collaborated with the American marketing company CMG Worldwide to allow a credit card company to use Mahatma Gandhi’s image in advertisements targeting college students; however, the move was seen as going against Gandhi’s principles, causing a strong public reaction that ultimately forcing him to withdraw from the agreement. In 2007, he was appointed Goodwill Ambassador of the CISRI-ISP intergovernmental agency to promote the use of the microalga Spirulina to combat malnutrition. In 2010, he guest-starred as himself in the Hindi semi-fictional film Road to Sangam.
In 2012, he resigned from his post. In 2008, he served as Chairman of the Australian Indian Rural Development Foundation (AIRDF). In 2014, he was appointed as a trustee of Maharashtra Gandhi Smarak Nidhi. In 2018, he played a key role in successfully urging India’s Supreme Court to direct states and union territories to implement its orders to control violence by vigilante groups. In 2019, he was appointed Director of Jalgaon Gandhi Research Foundation, Maharashtra.

- In March 2005, he hosted the 75th anniversary reenactment of the Dandy March. He embarked on the 241-mile walk and played a key role in convincing the Prime Minister of India to officially declare the route from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi as an Indian Heritage Road. In 2020, he commemorated the 90th anniversary of the Dandi March led by Mahatma Gandhi.
- In October 2019, he delivered a TEDx speech on “How to Maintain Social Dignity”.
- In November 2022, he marched with Rahul Gandhi at the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ in Shegaon, Maharashtra.
- During Rahul Gandhi’s ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’ 2022, Tushar gave a speech supporting Indian National Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s statement on Indian politician and activist Veer Savarkar and mentioned Veer Savarkar has apologized to the UK to be released from jail. He said,
It is true that Veer Savarkar was a friend of the British and he apologized to the British just to get out of jail, unlike what we got from WhatsApp University, there is evidence in history. ”
Savarkar not only helped the British but also helped Nathuram Godse find an efficient gun to murder Bapu. Until two days before Bapu’s murder, Godse did not have a reliable weapon to murder MK Gandhi.

- In December 2022, he received the Thampan Thomas Foundation Award for his contributions to society. He also received a cash award of Rs 1 lakh, a stone plaque and a merit certificate.
- In December 2022, when the Reserve Bank of India launched India’s digital currency, Tushar Gandhi expressed strong dissatisfaction with the exclusion of Mahatma Gandhi’s photo from the newly launched electronic banknotes. He expressed his disappointment with sarcasm in his tweets.
Kudos to the Reserve Bank of India and the Indian government for not including Bapu’s image in the newly launched digital currency. Now please remove his image from banknotes as well.

- He claimed that he was detained by Mumbai police on August 9, 2023, when he left his home to commemorate the Quit India movement.
For the first time in the history of independent India, I was detained at the Santacruz police station when I left home to mark Quit India Day on August 9. I am proud that my great-grandparents Bapu and Ba were also arrested by the British police on this historic day.
