After political turbulence in Hong Kong, Ma’s family moved to the United States when Ma was five years old. He then spent his childhood in New York, where his parents own and operate the American Chinese restaurant Ho Wah on Staten Island.
He is the youngest of six siblings and the youngest child of his parents. In terms of academics, he attended JHS 49 (now known as Dreyfus Intermediate School). He then attended PS 14 in Stapleton, Staten Island, New York.

Tzi became interested in acting after being cast as Buffalo Bill in the elementary school play Annie Get Your Gun. He began his professional acting career as a theater performer in 1973. In 1975, he made his first outdoor theater appearance as the Monkey King in a Peking opera called The Monkey King in The King of Yellowstone at Roosevelt State Park. Mako’s performance in Pacific Overtures had a significant impact on his acting career in the late 1970s.
Similarly, he appeared in a number of plays written by David Henry Hwang, including ROB, Yellow Face, Flowers Drum Song and The Dance and the Railroad.
