Udayanidhi Stalin

Udhayanidhi Stalin is a South Indian film actor, film producer and politician, known primarily for his work in Kollywood (Tamil film industry). He followed in the footsteps of his father MK Stalin and entered politics by joining the Dravida Mahasabha (DMK) in 2019. Udhayanidhi is said to be being groomed to succeed his father as the future president of the DMK.

Stalin entered Kollywood as a film producer and distributor through his production company Red Giant Movies. His first film as a producer was the action comedy Kuruvi (2008). The film starred Vijay and Trisha Krishnan.

His next film as a producer was Aadhavan, an action-comedy film that released on Diwali in 2009. His third release was the romantic comedy film Manmadan Ambu (2010). He has produced many other films during his career as a film producer. Apart from producing films, he has also worked as a film distributor. As a politician

Stalin was inducted into the Dravida Progressive Union (DMK) as the youth wing secretary in July 2019. The post of youth wing secretary is crucial in the party’s leadership as Udayanidhi’s father, DMK president MP Stalin, also held the post for more than three decades since 1982. It was only in 2016 that he assumed the post of president.

Stalin will make his debut in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly elections in 2021. The Dravidian Progressive Alliance has fielded him to represent the Chepauk-Thiruvallikeni constituency.

Opposition to Sanatan Dharma

On September 2, 2023, Udhayanidhi was embroiled in controversy after making derogatory remarks about Sanatana Dharma at a press conference. He linked Sanatana Dharma to diseases like dengue and malaria and suggested that it should be “eradicated” as he believed it violated the principles of social justice. On September 6, 2023, an FIR was filed against Udhayanidhi by the Uttar Pradesh State for hurting religious sentiments. Later, another FIR was filed against him at the Mira Road police station in Mumbai; the case was filed under Sections 153A and 295A of the Indian Penal Code. While Udhayanidhi was widely criticized for his remarks, some politicians, including Priyank Kharge and Udit Raj, expressed their support. On September 20, 2023, Udhayanidhi made more remarks about Sanatana Dharma at an event. He gave a derogatory example in his speech involving Indian President Draupadi Murmu. Udayanidhi claimed that while many celebrities were invited to visit the new Parliament building on September 19, 2023, Murmu was not invited because she is a widow and belongs to the tribal community.
