UnitedHealthcare CEO Shooting Suspect Quoted the Unabomber Manifesto on Goodreads — And Gave it Four Stars

A Goodreads account has surfaced that appears to belong to Luigi Mangione, the suspect in the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.

The bill came to light amid Mangione’s detention at an Altoona, Pa., McDonald’s, where he was found in possession of a 9 mm “ghost gun,” multiple fake IDs and a 3-page manifesto criticizing the health insurance industry, following Thompson’s Wednesday, Dec. 4 death .

NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny said Mangione’s manifesto shows he “has ill will toward corporate America.” The shell casings found at the crime scene were also engraved with the words “deny,” “defend,” and “dismiss,” similar to the insurance industry phrase that describes a claim denial strategy, “delay, deny, defend,” which was used as the title of Professor Jay Feinman’s book from Rutgers University in 2010.

While the motive remains unclear, Mangione’s Goodreads account indicates that he read and gave a four-star review to Theodore (Ted) John Kaczynski Industrial society and its futurealso known as the Unabomber Manifesto.

Although Mangione wrote on Goodreads that Kaczynski was a “violent individual” who was “rightly imprisoned,” he described his actions “as those of an extreme political revolutionary.”

He also liked the quote from Kurt Vonnegut’s anti-war novel Slaughterhouse-Friand John Stuart Mill’s economic textbook Principles of political economy and a quote from Tim Urban comparing knowledge to a tree.
