Madrasahs Uttar Pradesh: The Uttar Pradesh Department of Basic Education has stated that madrasas operating in Muzaffarnagar without registration will have to pay a fine of Rs 10,000 per day. The departmental officer sent a notice to more than a dozen madrasahs that operate without permission and asked them to submit the relevant documentation.

According to officials, there are over 24,000 madrasas in UP. Of these, 16,000 are registered and recognized, while the remaining 8,000 are unrecognized. The authorities have asked the unregistered to submit original documents within 3 days of receiving the notification or they will face strict measures.

Shubham Shukla, Muzaffarnagar Basic Shiksha Adhikari said that the district minority department has informed his office that more than 100 madrasas are functioning without any registration and authorization. They are acting against the rules.

Jamait Ulama-i-Hind calls Ministry’s order “illegal”

Investigating the notice issued to the madrassas, the Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind termed the department’s decision as ‘illegal’. Maulana Zakir Husain, secretary of the Jamiat Ulema-e-Hind unit in Uttar Pradesh, said madrassas in the district were being harassed by sending illegal notices targeting a particular community.

“Madrassas provide free education to students, they will not be able to pay a fine of 10,000 rupees per day,” he added. Meanwhile, according to a senior official in Lucknow, more than 4,000 madrassas in UP are under the scanner for getting foreign funds.

A special investigation team to investigate the use of money

The UP government has now set up a three-member special investigation team to probe around 4,000 madrassas, most of which operate along the Indo-Nepal border receiving funds from foreign countries, according to the official. The team will investigate whether the money received from abroad has been used in any illegal activity (such as forced religious conversion, terrorism, etc.).
