Up to 50 people injured as two trams collide at Strasbourg station as smoke fills tunnel & passengers scream in terror

AT LEAST five people are fighting for their lives among 50 injured after two trams collided at a station in France.

Heartbreaking footage shows the aftermath of the fatal crash with onlookers breaking down doors to pull terrified passengers to safety.

The horrific accident at Strasbourg-Ville station is believed to have been caused when one of the trams accidentally changed tracks before crashing into another tram parked at the station.

Mayor Jeanne Barseghian visited the crash site and described the incident as a “brutal collision.”

In the chaotic footage, people can be heard screaming as smoke fills the tunnel’s underground station shortly after the crash.

Heroic bystanders can be seen trying to save those trapped inside the wreckage of the tram.

Both trams that took part in the fatal collision were crushed with the front and rear parts.

The fire and rescue service of the Bas-Rhin region confirmed that at least 50 passengers were injured in the accident.

And the five wounded are reportedly in critical condition and undergoing hospital treatment.

There were about 100 people in the two trams at that moment.

One of the trams is reported to have derailed following the accident, and an investigation into the cause of the crash is ongoing.

More than 130 firefighters were deployed to the station along with 50 rescue vehicles as a safety perimeter was ordered.

The police confirmed that the tram service through the Central Station is interrupted.

The Bas-Rhin Fire and Rescue Service said: “Tram accident at Gare Centrale station in Strasbourg. Numerous resources have been mobilized.

“Avoid the areas of Place des Halles, Gare, Boulevard du Président Wilson and facilitate access to emergency services.”

Pierre Jakubowicz, councilor in Strasbourg, announced: “The collision of the tram Majo at the station in Strasbourg.

“Support and appreciation to the mobilized emergency services and all my thoughts to the injured.”

Strasbourg-ville is the main railway station in the city of Strasbourg, Bas-Rhin, France.

This is the first time that the city has experienced a significant accident in public transport since they reopened the trams in 1994.
