USA Gymnastics says it has video evidence to prove Jordan Chiles deserves to keep her bronze medal.
“USA Gymnastics formally submitted a letter and video evidence to the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Sunday, conclusively determining that head coach Cecile Landi’s request for an investigation was filed 47 seconds after the results were announced, within 1 minute of the FIG rule,” he said. alliance in a statement he shared with PEOPLE on Aug. 11.
The letter sent to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) includes a request by USA Gymnastics to “revise the ruling and reinstate Chiles’ bronze medal score of 13.766,” according to an Aug. 11 statement.
Chiles, 23, originally received a score of 13.666 in the women’s floor exercise final on Aug. 5, placing her in fifth place. After her coach Cecile Landi argued that the judges had misjudged the difficulty level of Chiles’ routine in the initial score, the judges agreed. That changed her score to 13.766, jumping her to third ahead of Romanian gymnasts Ana Barbosa and Sabrina Maneca-Voine, who both finished with scores of 13.700.

The Romanian Olympic Committee then protested to the International Olympic Committee (IOC) because Landi’s query that resulted in Chiles third place was not sent in time. The petition claimed that Landi was four seconds late.

In its Aug. 11 statement, USA Gymnastics said it submitted “time-stamped, video evidence” to CAS that “shows that Landi first stated her request to submit an inquiry at the inquiry table 47 seconds after the result was announced, and then a second statement 55 seconds after the result was originally announced.”
“The basis for CAS’s decision on Friday to overturn the investigation was that ‘The inquiry filed on behalf of Ms. Jordan Chiles in the women’s floor exercise final was initiated after the one-minute time limit provided for in Article 8.5 of the 2024 FIG Technical Regulations and it was found to have no effect,’ USA Gymnastics continued.

“The submitted video footage was not available to USA Gymnastics prior to the court’s decision and therefore USAG did not have the opportunity to submit it beforehand.”
CAS will then have to review the evidence submitted by USA Gymnastics to determine whether or not the ruling stands.
