Usher’s 4 Kids: Everything to Know

Grammy-winning artist Usher has one of the most versatile careers — he’s acted in movies, performed on Broadway, and coached Voice — but his most important role is dad.

Usher is the proud father of four children. He shares sons Usher “Cinco” V, 16, and Navid Ely, 14, with ex-wife Tameka Foster, as well as a daughter, Sovereign Bo, 3, and a son, Sire Castrello, 2, with his longtime girlfriend, Jenn Goicoechea.

He said Essence in 2008 that he assessed “what I feel like I’m missing from my own father — knowing that I’m accepted. That I’m important. And hearing that he cares enough to put me before himself” and vowed to give his children the support and security he never had .

Usher’s children have also served as inspiration behind some of his music. He revealed that his 2020 song “I Cry” was inspired by the first time his eldest sons saw him shed tears.

“There was a moment between son and father [in the movie] and it dawned on me – I started to cry. So, my children look at me and ask: ‘Are you crying?!’ ” Usher recalled. “I’m like, ‘Yeah, I’m crying!’ They say, ‘Are you crying?!’ I said, ‘Yes, I’m crying, and it’s okay to cry’. ”

Both of Usher’s children with Goicoeche were born during the COVID-19 pandemic. He opened up about his experience during a performance in September 2020 at The Late Late Show with James Corden.

“I think everyone had a chance to rest and realize what’s really important at this time – that’s family,” he said. “It’s getting closer to loved ones and appreciating the ones you have while you have them.”

Usher “Cinco” Raymond V, 16

Usher’s first son, Usher Raymond V, was born on November 27, 2007 to Usher and his then-wife Foster.

Before the birth, Usher expressed his hopes for his firstborn during an interview with PEOPLE.

“I just want my son to be fully coherent and healthy, first and foremost,” he said. “You can wish for a million and one things. But I hope my son has the same energy I had as a kid. I hope he doesn’t get as bad as I did. I hope he’s just a healthy son.”

In 2008, Usher and Usher V appeared on the cover Essence together. In his interview, the artist talked about how parenthood made him think about his own father’s role in his life and how he intended to be a better role model for his son.

“You should never abandon that responsibility, which is to be there, to read with your child, to support the child’s growth,” he told this newspaper. “It’s communication. It’s a decision to put your child before your own vanity.”

When Usher V was just 5 years old, he almost drowned after his hand got stuck in a pool drain while trying to retrieve a toy.

“I am blessed and happy to say that my son Usher V is doing well and recovering,” Usher said in a statement at the time. “I am overwhelmed by the outpouring of prayers, love and support for my family’s well-being.”

Usher also thanked those involved in saving his son’s life, including two employees who worked at the home and jumped into the pool to save him.

In 2014, Usher V was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes at the age of 6. While speaking at JDRF’s Promise Ball the following year, which raises awareness and money for research and a cure for diabetes, Usher said how proud he was of his son.

“A kid who has to be poked every day and has to watch what he eats and also carry this disorder with him — that’s really the kind of courage we all aspire to,” he said.

After doctors diagnosed Usher V as diabetic, the “OMG” singer said that co-parenting with Foster has become “very complicated” because it requires “a great deal of consideration and commitment” to manage the disease.

“From the moment type 1 diabetes became a conversation, it was a readjustment to life. Life as we knew it changed,” he told PEOPLE in 2023. “The reason for the disaster is a lack of communication.”

In November 2022, Usher shared what his oldest boys think about his global fame. He noted that Usher V prefers to use his nickname to separate himself from his father.

“I have one son, Cinco, who doesn’t like being called Usher, who’s trying to get away from it,” he told Tamron Hall.

Navid Ely, 14

Usher and Foster welcomed their second son, Navid Ely, on December 10, 2008.

In June 2009, Usher filed for divorce from Foster. Their divorce was finalized in November and Usher was awarded full custody of their two sons.

When Naviyd was just 3 years old, he joined his dad and brother at the premiere of the documentary in 2011. Justin Bieber: Never say never. Usher was a mentor to the “Holy” singer when he first broke into the music scene a few years ago.

After shooting his film in 2016 Hands of stoneUsher told PEOPLE that he took a break from his career to “focus on my children and personal matters.”

He then described a perfect moment he spent in Italy with Usher V and Naviyd, who were 8 and 7 at the time.

“I went on a hot air balloon trip with about 15 people and we were about 3,000 feet in the air,” he said. “Both of my boys were up there with me … The whole family was up there. It was great to have that little moment.”

That same year, Usher V and Naviyd attended their father’s Hollywood Walk of Fame ceremony on September 7, 2016. The family posed for photos alongside Usher’s star on the red carpet.

In December 2021, Usher wished Naviyd a happy 13th birthday on Instagram, writing alongside photos of them together: “NAVIYD!!! Turnin the Big 13!!! My silent partner, creative director, always full of ideas… You are “The Good news” I wish you the happiest birthday son!! Love DAD You are my favorite 13 year old.”

Usher spent quality time with Naviyd at the AMIRI Fall-Winter 2022 show in Los Angeles, where the pair sat front row with Evan Ross.

In his interview with Hall in November 2020, Usher said that unlike his older brother Usher V, Naviyd “really likes to party.” Not only does he watch all of Dad’s shows, but he also criticizes him.

“He says, ‘You missed this. You didn’t do this.’ And I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s the point. It shouldn’t be the same every night,'” Usher said.

Sovereign Bo, 3

Sovereign Bo was born about a month early on September 24, 2020. She is Usher’s first child with girlfriend Goicoeche.

“We feel blessed and full of love with the arrival of our beautiful baby girl, Sovereign Bo Raymond,” Usher wrote on Instagram alongside a photo of his newborn’s hand. “‘Isn’t She Lovely’ by Stevie Wonder on repeat ❤️ ❤️ ❤️.”

Usher announced a few weeks ago on September 2, 2020 that he and Goicoechea were expecting their first child together.

“Babies always bring such joy to families and [I’m] I’m very excited about my young — well, my bob has arrived,” he continued Good morning America.

Usher revealed the symbolism behind his first daughter’s name in a May 2021 interview Extra.

“Sovereign, man, to me it’s such a beautiful word and name, you know, supreme ruler is obviously a defined name,” he explained. “She definitely rules the household, but Sovereign Bo – Bo is at the end, then [she’s] my little ‘reign-bo.’ ”

Sovereign is Usher’s only daughter, and she was born knowing what she wanted, as he told Ellen DeGeneres.

“She was out early,” he said. “She was meant to be a Scorpio, but she decided she had a different plan. Libras, you know, sort of decided what they wanted to do.”

Speaking about his Las Vegas residency at Caesars Palace, Usher said Good morning America in July 2021 that he “loves being a woman’s father”.

“I even change colors; I wear pink and cool things like that,” he added.

However, Sovereign was not the only baby in the house for long. She was still a baby when Goicoechea and Usher announced that they were expecting a child again.

In October 2022, Usher shared an adorable photo of Sovereign dressed as Mirabel Madrigal from Disney’s Halloween Enchantment.

Father Castrello, 2

Sire Castrello, was born to Goicoechee and Usher on September 29, 2021.

The father-of-four announced the birth of his son next month on Instagram, posting a black and white photo of the baby’s face and captioning it: “Hi my name is Sire Castrello Raymond … I’m the newest member of the Raymond team. I was born on September 29, 2021 at 6 p.m. :42 weighing in at 7 lbs 13 oz. Hear me roar … AKA Ra Ra . 👶🏽 ♎️ Gang.”

After Usher said he did a “terrible job” choosing the music for Sovereign’s birth, he was determined to pick a better song for Sire’s entrance into the world; he chose “In Da Club” by 50 Cent.

The second time I came fully equipped, he revealed The Ellen Degeneres Show. “I had my Mophie. I had speakers. I had spare batteries. I had a whole playlist that I’d been working on for about two weeks. It was crazy. It was great.”

Ahead of Sire’s first birthday, Usher shared a series of photos of the two together. In the photos, Usher is smiling at his youngest son, and there is also a video of the baby giggling happily. “Blessings,” Usher captioned the post.

“Me and him have a really great relationship. He’s different than any of my other kids,” he told PEOPLE. “I’ve managed to have a little code that goes with him when I talk to him and how we talk to each other. He drives me nuts … My new little boy, he’s something special.”

In October 2022, he celebrated Sire and Sovereign’s birthdays by posting photos of them from a movie-inspired suit shoot The Boss Baby 2: The Family Business. The two little ones both wore the same suits with their hair slicked back.

Usher also posted a photo of him and Sire in casual clothes, with the caption: “#1 under construction☝🏾HAPPY 1ST BIRTHDAY Sire Ra!! 🎂🎉🥳🎊MyBiggieBoy.”
