Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan is a Pakistani singer who specializes in Khayal classical music genre. The singer belongs to Patiala Gharana. He was the younger brother of Ustad Amanat Ali Khan, with whom he sang. The duo of Ustad Amanat Ali Khan and Bade Fateh Ali Khan were at the peak of their careers in the 1950s and 1960s. Gained huge popularity. In 1969, Fateh Ali and his brother Amanat Ali Khan won the Pride of Performance Award, Pakistan’s highest national literary award, awarded by the President of Pakistan.

Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan was born in 1935 in Sham Chaurasi, Hoshiarpur, Punjab, British India (now Punjab, India). He was 82 years old. After the partition of India and Pakistan in 1947, he moved to Pakistan with his family at the age of 12. He studied music under his father Ustad Akhtar Hussain Khan, also a famous singer under the patronage of the Maharaja of Patiala . He continues the legacy of Patiala Gharana and sings classical Hindustani music. At the age of 9, he and his younger brother Ustad Amanat Ali Khan began performing in the court of the Maharaja of Patiala.

Carrying on the legacy of Patiala Gharana, Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan started singing classical Hindustani vocal music at the age of 9. He was inspired and learned music from his elders. He was trained by his father Akhtar Hussain Khan and his elder brother Ustad Amanat Ali Khan. When he was a teenager, he started singing with his elder brother in the court of Maharaja Patiala Yadavinder Singh. Amanat Ali Khan and Fateh Ali Khan were popular in the 1950s and 1960s. That was the peak of their success. The duo made their first public appearance in 1945 at a concert sponsored by the influential musical esthete Pandit Jeevanlal Matoo. In 1949, they performed at the All-Bengal Music Conference in Calcutta, which made them very popular and successful. Since then, the two have toured South Asia extensively, becoming representatives of Patiala Gharana.

Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan has expertise in classical and semi-classical music genres such as Khayal, Thumri, Ghazal and Dadra. He was also trained in the medieval style Dhrupad. He was proficient in ragas while his brother Amanat Ali was proficient in sur. The two were divided according to their respective majors, with Amanat Ali Khan singing the treble and Fateh Ali Khan singing the bass. The thumri ‘Kab aao gey’ sung by the duo is considered a historical classic. In 1992, Ustad Fateh Ali Khan collaborated with Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and released a CD called “Ragas and Sagas”, which was appreciated by the audience.

Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan teaches students from all over the world. Afghan pop singer Ahmed Wali is his disciple. Wali was so talented that Ustad renamed him after himself Ahmed Wali Fateh Ali Khan. One of his favorite students, Dia, went on to become an Emmy Award-winning filmmaker. She is from Norway and is half Afghan and half Pakistani. In addition, the famous Nohakhawan Haider Rizvi Alhussaini was also his student.

On January 4, 2017, Ustad Bade Fateh Ali Khan passed away in Islamabad at the age of 82. He had been suffering from lung disease since 2016 and was admitted to Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) for 10 days. He is buried in Mominpura Cemetery, Lahore, Pakistan. After his death, the Arts Council of Pakistan organized a commemoration event on March 2, 2017, in memory of the iconic singer.
