Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson Take ‘Perfect’ First Family Vacation with Son Rome: See Photos (Exclusive) 

Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson are enjoying their first vacation as a family of three!

The Dancing with the stars the couple recently jetted off to the Beaches resort in Turks and Caicos for a milestone trip with their 19-month-old son Romeo. PEOPLE got an exclusive look at their “perfect” island getaway, including some of the fun activities they enjoyed together.

Chmerkovski’s parents joined the couple during the trip, which made it even more meaningful to the family.

“Family is everything to us. The opportunity to celebrate and relax in the beautiful Turks and Caicos with Rome and my parents is truly a gift,” Chmerkovskiy, 38, tells PEOPLE. “My parents love our son and love to spend every possible minute with him.”

As for flying with their child, the married professional dancers weren’t nervous or overwhelmed because their son is already a “smooth” traveler, they said.

“We travel a lot for work and we took Rome with us everywhere. He is already a real traveler and we feel very comfortable when he comes with us,” they tell PEOPLE. “We didn’t want parenthood to stop us from enjoying ourselves, we’re just enjoying ourselves with Rome now. That’s the best.”

The couple adds that Rome has already been on “over 25 flights” with them because DWTS and their residency with SAVOR in Chicago.

As for the activities they did together as a family, they “most looked forward to the water park that Beaches is famous for” and “just relaxing together.”

“The lazy river and water slides are a must,” says the resort’s Pirate’s Island water park. Photos from their trip also show the family enjoying the Sesame Street Parade at the resort.

Johnson, 30, adds that since her husband is more of a “beach lover,” they spent most of their time “playing in the beautiful sand and swimming in the crystal clear Caribbean water.”

They also made sure to explore the island’s vibrant marine life on snorkelling trips, enjoy a treatment at the Red Lane Spa Resort and share many meals together as a family.

The couple says they chose the hotel for their first family getaway because “it’s a quality resort that’s also kid-friendly. Now that we are a family of three, it was the perfect place where we can all have a good time.”

For their next vacation, Chmerkovskiy and Johnson say they’re eyeing Jamaica, but that trip likely won’t happen before Season 33 DWTS (premiering September 17 on ABC).

The couple first met on the hit ABC reality series in 2014 and later got engaged in June 2018 while on vacation in Venice. Their romantic wedding in Rancho Palo Verdes, California was attended by their close family and friends, including Chmerkovskiy’s brother Max Chmerkovskiy and several DWTS actors in April 2019.

They reached another important milestone in their relationship when they welcomed Roma, their first child together, on January 10, 2023.
