The Barack Obama Foundation’s CEO and board member Valerie Jarrett will deliver a speech on 7 March at William & Mary as part of the school’s celebrations of Women’s History Month and Values Week.
Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation, will speak at W&M during Women’s History Month.
Jarrett, who formerly worked as President Barack Obama’s senior advisor, will lecture about values-based leadership with a focus on W&M’s core values. She will also talk about her experiences as a woman who has held numerous high-level leadership positions throughout her career.
The debate will be hosted by Barbara Hamm Lee, anchor of WHRV’s “Another View,” and it will start at 6:30 p.m. in the Commonwealth Auditorium of the Sadler Centre. Community Values & Restorative Practises, the Centre for Student Diversity, and Alma Mater Productions are all co-sponsors of the event.
Doors to the debate open at six o’clock. Although admission is free and open to the public, tickets are necessary. On February 24, they will be accessible online at noon.
Jarrett is co-chair of The United State of Women and board chairman of Civic Nation. Jarrett sits on the boards of the Economic Club of Chicago, Lyft, Inc., Ralph Lauren Corporation, Walgreens Boot Alliance, Inc., Sweetgreen, Ariel Investments, The University of Chicago, and Sesame Street Workshop. Additionally, Jarrett is a member of the Goldman Sachs Advisory Board for One Million Black Women.
The longest-serving senior counsellor to a US president in history, Jarrett served as Obama’s chief of staff from 2009 to 2017. She led the White House Council for Women and Girls and managed the offices of Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs while serving in that position.
Jarrett holds degrees from Stanford University and the University of Michigan Law School, and he has had jobs in both the public and private sectors in the past. She worked as the chief executive officer of The Habitat Company, the city of Chicago’s commissioner of planning and development, and Richard M. Daley’s deputy chief of staff in addition to being a lawyer for ten years.
She has also served as the chairman of the board of the Chicago Stock Exchange, the chairman of the University of Chicago Medical Centre Board of Trustees, the vice chairman of the University of Chicago Board of Trustees, a director of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, and the chair of the Chicago Transit Board, among other leadership roles on corporate and nonprofit boards over the years.
